Abstract

Production challenges in horizontal wells are primarily caused by excessive gas, solids and slug flow behavior from the horizontal wellbore. Predicaments arise when Production Engineers attempt to maximize cash flows by maximizing drawdown. Downhole pump reliability problems and therefore operating expense escalate considerably when attempting maximize drawdown. In response, a tailpipe system solution has proven that mitigating slug flow before fluids enter the downhole separator and pump can resolve production challenges in horizontal wells.

This presentation will discuss how a producer originally developed a downhole slug flow mitigation system and then established a joint ventured with Schlumberger to effectively fully develop the technology. Recent results using an improved fifth-generation form of the system have reduced operational costs and risks. Multiple well case histories from the Wolfcamp and the Montney formation will be shared.

Biography

It was during Jeff’s tenure at TriAxon Oil Corp that he and his team were able to identify the root cause of horizontal artificial lift challenges. Their drive for innovation resulted in the design and development of the HEAL System™ and the subsequent creation of HEAL Systems (a Schlumberger Joint Venture). With over 4 years of field use, the HEAL System has approximately 400 installs across North America.

Jeff’s executive career was prefaced by positions with Weatherford Canada, Shell (UK) in the North Sea, and Husky Energy (Canada). In senior engineering positions Jeff acquired extensive technical experience in horizontal underbalanced drilling, multi-stage fracture stimulation, and artificial lift.

Jeff holds a B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Calgary and completed an MBA at the University of East Anglia in the United Kingdom.
