Abstract:
Wellbore cleanup is critical to restoring and optimizing production in oil and gas wells, particularly in mature fields where debris, scale, and fluid accumulation can significantly restrict flow. This presentation examines the application of downhole vacuum tools as an efficient solution for wellbore cleanup operations. By generating a localized vacuum at the perforations, these tools effectively remove sand, scale, fines, and other particulates from the wellbore and near-wellbore region. Field case studies demonstrate effective debris removal, improved well productivity, and reduced non-productive time compared to conventional cleanup methods. Key operational principles, deployment strategies, and performance results are discussed, highlighting downhole vacuum technology as a reliable and cost-effective approach to wellbore cleanup and sustained production enhancement.

James Reilly is a dedicated and versatile professional with extensive experience in the oil and gas industry, currently serving as the Product Line Manager for Wellbore Cleanup and Casing Exits at Baker Hughes. With over three years in this leadership role, he oversees product development and operational excellence in wellbore intervention technologies.
His career spans more than a decade, including multiple operations roles at Baker Hughes such as Field Supervisor, Applications Engineer, and Operations Manager. He has developed deep expertise in thru-tubing fishing, conventional fishing, casing exits, wellbore cleanup, liner systems, and completion hardware. James began his career in 2011 as a Rig Hand at Union Drilling in Pennsylvania and progressed through key positions at Weatherford, MBI Services, and Slaugh Fishing Services before joining Baker Hughes in 2014.
He holds dual bachelor’s degrees in Chemical Engineering (with an emphasis on Energy and Fuels) and Energy Engineering (specializing in Radiochemistry) from Pennsylvania State University (Class of 2010). Passionate about sustainability, James recently completed a Graduate Certificate in Business Sustainability Strategies and is pursuing a Master’s Degree in Renewable Energy and Sustainability Systems through Penn State World Campus.
