Abstract

Modern reservoir simulation has gone through a major evolution during the past decade. The traditional modelling workflow is a deterministic reservoir forecasting process that makes it possible to integrate reservoir geoscience and engineering data. The process includes history matching, forecasting, and sensitivity analysis. Modern flow modeling workflows are probabilistic forecasting workflows. The choice of workflow depends on whether a green field or a brown field is being studied. The workflows can be applied to reservoir assets ranging from gas fields to geothermal reservoirs. In this talk, I will describe procedures that are common to modern reservoir forecasting workflows, and present a practical hybrid modelling workflow that incorporates elements of deterministic and probabilistic techniques.

Biography

John R. Fanchi holds the Ross B. Matthews Chair of Petroleum Engineering at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas. Before this appointment, he taught petroleum and energy engineering courses at the Colorado School of Mines, and worked in the technology centers of four oil and gas companies. He is a Distinguished Member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers. He has recently published the fourth edition of "Principles of Applied Reservoir Simulation" (Elsevier – Gulf Professional Publishing, 2018).
