Abstract

This presentation will provide a basic understanding of SAGD (steam assisted gravity drainage) as a thermal recovery process to deplete unconventional heavy oil reservoirs. It covers the practical aspects of commercial development of SAGD pads, pads layout, drilling, completion, and production. Details on reservoir surveillance, management, and reservoir simulation modeling will be presented along with all phases of SAGD production such as start up and wind-down processes. Infill well development and timing during SAGD operations will be discussed and the overall success and challenges of this process will be demonstrated through case studies.

Biography

Hussain Sheikha is currently a Senior Reservoir Engineer with Denbury Resources working on development of CO2 floods. Prior to joining Denbury, he worked with Suncor Energy, Firebag and MacKay River Asset Teams as a development and optimization engineer. He worked for Penn West Exploration with the EOR team in development of hydrocarbon miscible flood, waterflood, polymer and CO2 injection. His work has been diversified in covering both conventional and heavy oil reservoirs and he has taught several industry training courses in thermal and enhanced oil recovery. He graduated with a Ph.D. in petroleum engineering from the University of Calgary and is a registered Professional Engineer in the Province of Alberta, a member of Canadian Heavy Oil Association, SPE, and associate member of Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologists.
