Carbon capture utilization and sequestration (CCUS/CCS) is already well established in Western Canada with the first-legs of a Carbon Trunkline already in operation, including:
- One trans-border line into Saskatchewan, supporting the Weyburn/Midale CO2 EOR project;
- The Alberta Carbon Trunkline, supporting the Clive CO2 EOR project;
- The Shell Quest deep CCS project;
- The Aquistore buffer storage project at the Boundary Dam Power Plant; and
- Multiple CCS projects and hubs in various stages in the planning process.
However, the process to FID will need to be accelerated to support the Western Canadian H2 and petrochemical ambitions, as well as expanded Oil Production, Processing and Refining.
CCS and H2 operations share a number of common technical, commercial, HSES, R&D and Social License challenges, which will be examined during this workshop.
Hydrogen exploration is defined in its broadest sense in terms of Opportunity Identification and well as physical exploration for Natural Hydrogen, which may be co-sourced with Helium & low BTU gas.
Relatively clean H2 extracted from Natural Gas (so-called Blue Hydrogen) will be key to decarbonizing many heavy industries, including upgrading & refining operations, as well as heavy transport. It is seen as a great business opportunity for the stranded gas resources in Alberta and NE BC, but will have to compete with cleaner hydrogen manufactured close to some of the key markets with relatively low-cost hydro & nuclear power in parts of Eastern Canada and BC; as well as with the conventional gas markets and the new LNG facilities.
Exciting times ahead for the Decision Analysts & Portfolio managers!
Please consider participation. For overseas members, this is a great time to visit Western Canada on-route to (or as an alternate) to) ATCE.

Bob
