The Journey So Far

Oil business was more like an epic card game, in which excitement was worth more than great stack of chips…..William C. Mellon

I feel the statement quoted in the book ‘The Prize: the Epic Quest for Oil, Money & Power’ in the early 20th century still holds true. The wide expanse of this industry is dotted with uncertainties. This profession caters to be evincive inferring valuable information from primary indications buried, geological uncertainties, interpretations & predictions helping to visualize a sub-surface model.

Being in close touch with the industry from last three years as a student, a sense of pride instills within. I now watch for the overpassed, decipher the ignored and understand the bewildering for instigating a sense of innovation & knowledge. Inspiration lures my soul evoking endurance and abysmal hopes having capability to tackle the challenges, confronting with a feasible solution. Every day the rising sun outcrops confidence for a new beginning, dreams & expectations with dawn culminating to satisfaction achieved making it a top-flight career.

Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) plays an important role in overall transformation of a high school pass out - engineer – petroleum discipline – integral part of the industry. Starting from an insight into the oil & gas industry, interesting articles, JPT, eMentoring, SPE Connect, scholarships, webinars, volunteer opportunities, distinguished lectures, conferences, workshops, technical library, E&P industry wiki, classroom presentation etc. serves as a valuable resource for any individual associated with this industry.

Our MIT Pune SPE Chapter has been active all way along. With various case studies, business challenges, model making, paper presentations, quizzes, debates & extempore with the panel discussions have been encouraging budding petroleum engineers right from the first year. I have been active in SPE activities from my second year onwards. With winning the paper presentation competition at this level, it boosted my confidence to smear up technical skills, build a global personality & network through the events. From then, there has been no stopping since.

Alongside our college curriculum, it became a routine to spend time every day on www.spe.org and other societies as well like EAGE, SEG etc. A thirst for knowledge quenched me in books to continue reading and learning, also being updated about day-to-day activities around the globe. With this, I was well prepared to participating in my second SPE chapter fest in my college. Having worked rigorously for two months on the problem statements released, the SPE event was a huge success. I won many prizes like first in case study, first in debate & second in extempore. This instilled a confidence inside about the firm foundation laid of the basic courses of petroleum engineering. Since then, I have been working towards expanding my horizons on technical grounds and learning courses allied to the college curriculum, which surely has been enticing me.

At this point, I am eagerly waiting for attending my third MIT Pune SPE Chapter fest to be held in March, 2016. I have plans to make this event a grand success like previous years with a remembrance for years to come. Diligent work, enthusiasm, whole-hearted participation and eagerness to learn is the key to be successful in this field, which is what I’ve realized in due course of time -which is though relatively very short!
