Understanding High-Frequency Drilling Dynamics using Advanced Sensor Technology
By Distinguished Lecturer Junichi Sugiura¨of Sanvean Technologies

Abstract:
During drilling, bottom-hole assemblies (BHAs) are often subjected to severe shocks and
sustained high-magnitude vibrations. These downhole dysfunctions can result in equipment failures and associated non-productive time. The associated reduction in drilling performance and increase in drilling costs has driven extensive research towards gaining a better understanding of the complex downhole drilling dynamics.
In the past decade, rapid advances in high-temperature, cost-effective, miniature solid-state sensors have accelerated downhole high-frequency drilling-dynamics research to new levels. Downhole drilling-dynamics studies using compact high-frequency recorders deployed at multiple points in the BHA have dramatically improved our understanding of the complex dynamic behavior of the bit, BHA and drillstring. Further, the amount of downhole data collected with such sensors is rapidly growing, creating a new opportunity for big data analytics and condition-based monitoring/maintenance. The phrase "Data is the New Oil" is likely to have ever greater relevance within the drilling industry in the coming years. This presentation discusses the latest miniature, solid-state, high-frequency drillingdynamics sensor innovations and drilling-dynamics discoveries, and considers future trends regarding the use of such sensors in the drilling industry. These sensors provide valuable drilling-dynamics insight at the bit, mud motor, and even all the way to the rig surface equipment.
