Wireless Monitoring Reduces Reservoir Uncertainties in Suspended and Abandoned Subsea Wells
By Donald Horsfall,  Exprogroup

Abstract

The exploration and appraisal market is increasingly using new technology to gather data from the reservoir to reduce uncertainties and further use this newly accessible reservoir monitoring option for abandoned and suspended subsea wells to make informed field development decisions.

The CaTS™ wireless gauge technology has been used for real‐time reservoir data monitoring in subsea wells since 2006 and is part of an 19 year continuous technology development for wireless communication in oil & gas wells.

The presentation will describe how the CaTS technology was successfully deployed as part of a drill stem test to monitor the reservoir to reduce uncertainties with the following objectives:

  • Verifying the presence of the channel sands
  • Quantifying channel productivity and contributions by performing an extended pressure build-up
  • Pressure build-up envisaged to last many months or even years so had to be performed using a wireless gauge technology that did not require the rig to be on location

Bio

Donald graduated from the Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen in 2006 with a BA in Management.  He joined Expro in 2007 as a field technician in the Well Test product line and developed his experience across a range of operational positions within the company.

Moving from offshore to onshore, Donald held several supervisory roles before progressing to management roles within the Well Test, Wireless Well Solutions and Subsea product lines.

As Global Sales Manager, Donald is currently responsible for the delivery of Expro’s wireless CaTS™ technology and Subsea Well Access Systems.  His focus is on how technology development within the service sector can bring value and efficiencies to the oil & gas industry.
