Maximize Value from Existing Fields with Extended Reach Drilling and Novel Well Technology

By Kristian Solhaug (Fishbones), Fabian Bjørnseth (Aker BP)

Fishbones stimulation technology is an open hole completion stimulation system. Fishbones is installed as part of the open hole lower completion and comprises subs that house up to 12-meter-long tubes referred to as needles. Multiple subs can be spaced out along the liner. The needles extend into the formation in one single circulation operation with all laterals created simultaneously. The result is a well with numerous laterals, connecting the wellbore to the reservoir, thereby increasing reservoir exposure, increasing accessible reserves, and increasing productivity.

Edvard Grieg is an oil field producing from high permeable sandstone and low permeable conglomerate formation. The tight conglomerate holds significant part of the initial oil in place and drainage of the formation is a vital part of the field development strategy. The development of Fishbones drilling stimulation techniques was started to ensure economic well rates from the tight formations. The Valhall field consists of oil accumulations in soft chalk formations, with up to 50% initial porosity. The completion techniques of choice have changed significantly over the life of the field and, focus has been on achieving economical production rates while avoiding chalk influx plugging the wellbores. Since 2009, Fishbones technology has been continuously under development to enable a low-cost alternative to proppant fracturing.

The presentation will describe technology development progress, the implementation of the technology to date, as well as future plans for the two fields
