Title July Luncheon - Considering Transitioning from Gas Lift to Increase Drawdown? How Mitigating Slug Flow Results in Significant In Description Production challenges in horizontal wells are primarily caused by slug flow behaviour from the horizontal. Slug flow has resulted in a predicament for Production Engineers, where attempts to increase production drawdown have compromised downhole pump reliability. In response, a system solution was developed to mitigate slug flow before fluids enter the downhole separator and pump. Slug flow mitigation enhances rod pumping, allowing it to be more effective and efficient, offering a solution for low cost OPEX to reliably maximize drawdown. This presentation analyzes multiple Permian Basin installations of a slug flow mitigation solution where transitioning from gas lifting to rod pumping resulted in a production improvement. It explores requirements for intermediate artificial lift systems, challenges achieving production forecasts, managing declines, slug flow consequences and solids production mechanisms, and impacts from horizontal wellbore trajectories. The presentation compares recent long-term, case studies that demonstrate the impact of slug flow mitigation on well production economics. It offers insights into long-term NPV benefits achieved by transitioning from gas lifting to rod pumping.
