  • SPE National Capital Section 2019 Scholarship Award Program

    I. Award Details

    A. The National Capital Section of SPE is pleased to be offering a $1,000 scholarship to a single college student or incoming college student interested in the petroleum and natural gas industry. See Article II of this document for eligibility details.

    B. The scholarship is a commitment for one year only; there is no implied or explicit agreement that the scholarship is awarded to the same student throughout their college career. However, a winner of the annual scholarship award may apply in subsequent years pursuant to Article VI.

    II. Eligibility

    A. Eligible applicants include current college students committed to a Bachelor of Science degree program listed in Article II.B who will be attending for two (2) full semesters following receipt of the scholarship or high school seniors admitted to a 4-year institution offering a Bachelor of Science degree in fields listed in Article II.B.

    B. Eligible B.S. Degree Programs, in order of preference:
    -Petroleum, Natural Gas, Chemical, or Geological Engineering
    -Geology or Geophysics
    -Mechanical, Electrical, or Metallurgical Engineering
    -Metallurgy, Materials Science, Chemistry, or Physics
    -Other Natural Science or Engineering Fields

    C. Applicant must be a U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident at the time of application.

    D. Applicant must be a resident of the District of Columbia, Maryland, or Virginia at the time of application to the scholarship.

    E. Only applicants that have a high school or college grade-point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale qualify for the scholarship.

    F. Children or relatives of current officers or scholarship award committee members are not eligible for this award program.

    III. Application Procedures

    A. Applicants must complete, print, sign, and mail via the postal service the appropriate (High School or College) National Capital Section SPE Scholarship application to the Scholarship Chairperson listed in Article VII.

    B. College students: Send or have your school send official college transcripts (all schools attended) to the Scholarship Chairperson listed in Article VII.

    C. High school students: Send or have your school send official high school transcripts (all schools attended) and official ACT or SAT test score transcripts and official college acceptance letters to the Scholarship Chairperson listed in Article VII.

    D. Send application materials to the Scholarship Chairperson listed in Article VII postmarked no later than April 30, materials received with postmarks dated later than April 30 cannot be accepted.

    IV. Award Selection Process

    A. Applications will be reviewed and the scholarship applicant will be selected by the National Capital Section SPE Scholarship Award Selection Committee. Applications will be chosen based on their responses in the Scholarship Applications and in part on their chosen field of study in accordance with the “order of preference” listed in Article II.B.

    B. The Scholarship Award Selection Committee shall be composed of at least 3 and no more than 5 members.

    C. The Scholarship Award Selection Committee members must be National Capital Section SPE members in good standing.

    D. The Scholarship Award Selection Committee will review application materials (follow-up phone or email contact may be part of the review process) and select an individual recipient for the award by no later than May 31.

    E. The Scholarship Award Selection Committee shall be contingent on the applicant’s confirmed enrollment in or acceptance into the college identified in the Scholarship Application and grade transcripts of the same year as the initial award.

    V. Presentation

    A. The scholarship award presentation shall consist of a letter mailed via the postal service and an email and/or phone call to the scholarship recipient from the Scholarship Chairperson on behalf of the Scholarship Award Committee.

    B. The scholarship award payment process will be determined based on agreement between the educational institution and the SPE National Capital Section Scholarship Award Committee.

    C. The scholarship award payment will be sent within one month of the college’s confirmation of the recipient’s enrollment or acceptance.

    VI. Continuing Eligibility

    A. A student who has received a National Capital Section SPE scholarship may apply in a subsequent year to receive a renewal of the scholarship amount provided:

    1) The student continues to fulfill the eligibility requirements as specified in Article II.A-F.

    2) The student submits an application and official grade transcript by April 30.

    3) The student’s enrollment is confirmed in accordance with Article IV.E.

    4) The maximum number of annual awards any student may obtain is four (4).
