  • Great Yarmouth Society of Petroleum Engineers - Look back with a trip down memory lane

    Gt Yarmouth Chapter

Reading back to the mid 90’s records show that the GY Chapter of SPE had a local board totalling 14 drawn from local companies within Gt Yarmouth and Lowestoft.

The monthly SPE Bulletin was prepared by local historian and marketing publicist. Many will recall the highlight of the SPE season the Oil Barons Ball - a popular event attracting 450 plus attendees which celebrated the industry and the chapter activities in the SNS and onshore at the East coast gas terminals.

The current board recently paid homage to those members that we know who have passed away, including 4 former Oil Barons.  A recent contribution to the Sarah Chapman Care Unit at the James Paget Hospital in Gorleston was made by the GY Chapter.

Phil Smith and Bob Byrom visited James Paget Hospital hospital on Friday, 20 January 2023, to hand over the cheque to some of the Sandra Chapman team and the hospital's Charity co-ordinator Maxine Taylor.

Out of the directors for the 1995/96 season only 2 from that period remain as local board members namely Clive Skoyles, and Phil Smith. The current local volunteer board totals 8 and will be due for election review at the AGM in May next year ready for the September monthly restart.

As we all know with the introduction of renewable energy the decline in exploration on our shores our membership took a hit. We do, however, continue to promote lecturer visits and International SPE webinars to support our current local membership. We welcome former industry persons retired or otherwise to help revive interest. Current local membership is 46 with 8 student graduates on a Master’s degree course at Cranfield University as at end 2023.

We ask each current member to take 5 mins to post any question or update to local Chairperson: GY Chapter Chairman Bob Byrom, email bobb@modgy.co.uk or call 01493 658488.

The local board can then review and reply via Informz for the next issue. Clearly our aim is to retain and expand current membership as well as to plan a social event for the 2024/2025 seasons.

In the interim, we wish all and their families an enjoyable and peaceful festive season.
