SPE coordinates 14 regional student paper contests at the Undergraduate, Master's, and PhD level. Students compete against other students from their region for the opportunity to advance to the International Student Paper Contest, held during the Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition (ATCE).

The following roles are available for volunteers this Regional Student Paper Contest:

  • Abstract Judges (Undergraduate, Masters and PhD division)
    • Judges will review submitted abstracts to select the finalists that will attend the Regional Student Paper Contest Finals/Presentation Round. The winner of the presentation round (in each division) will attend the International Competition at the 2018 ATCE in Dallas.
    • This is an online duty that can be completed anywhere in the world
  • Presentation Judges (Undergraduate, Masters and PhD division)
    • Judges will need to be physically present at Rice University on 31 March 2018 to listen to, and judge the presentations by the finalists from the Abstract phase. The winner of the presentation round (in each division) will attend the International Competition at the 2018 ATCE in Dallas.

Eligibility

SPC volunteers must be:

  • Approved by the SPE Staff responsible for the organization of the contest
  • SPE members in good standing (renewed membership for 2018)
  • Judges must hold a minimum of a corresponding degree for the division in which they will be judging
  • Preferred previous experience in:
    • Similar style contests
    • Presenting at SPE Conferences
    • Program selection committees for SPE Conferences
    • Post-Secondary Faculty Member
  • Personal interest in developing university students
  • Effective communicator
  • Must live/reside in the Gulf Coast Region 

 

Expectations

Abstract selection Judges’ are expected to:

  • Review abstracts in advance of the contest and shortlist the students that will present at the contest
  • Take part in at least two teleconference calls between the date you begin your role and the date of the contest
  • Complete assigned abstracts before deadline
  • Have access to a computer and connection to the internet

Regional Finalist Judges Expectations:

  • Participate on the day of the contest to observe the presentations and mark the students based on criteria provided
    • The Regional Finals are being held at Rice University on 31 March 2018 in Houston, Texas
  • Ask any questions of the student following the presentation
  • Discuss any tie-breaker situations with the other judges to agree on a winner
  • Provide students with feedback to assist them with the continuous development of their presentation skills
  • Participate in debriefing session(s) as required following the contest
    *Note: Judges will be expected to fund their own travel and accommodation for the event

Selection of judges will take place on Wednesday 14 February 2018 with a teleconference taking place during the week commencing 19 February 2018. Judging of abstracts will take
