Lean Processing and Performance Improvement in Appalachian Basin

The oil and gas industry continues to evolve as commodity prices and customer demand fluctuates; companies perform layoffs and cuts in order to protect their market share and business health. Naturally oil and gas producers are in constant change. When energy demand is low or when drilling activity picks up, the main goal is to always operate efficiently despite personnel changes. Companies realized that the change and standardization needed within the organization, assuming that 85% of problems that a company faces are not related to individual’s performance, but rather internal processes and “work-arounds” that get incorporated over time.  Therefore creativity, innovation, and focus on what is important, are the key qualities for all employees to have in order to simplify their activities, and to shift focus on what their internal customer really values. This lunch and learn is about bringing concepts of Lean Six Sigma from manufacturing into the oil and gas industry and how it should be applied and embedded in people’s way of work.

Andrés Acuña is a Senior Petroleum Production Engineer and currently the Lean Sigma and Performance Improvement Advisor for Chevron Corp in Appalachian Mountain Business Unit (AMBU). In this role, he is responsible for mentoring all professionals in (AMBU) who have active projects related to Performance Improvement using Lean Sigma tools. He currently advises teams across multiple departments, included Drilling and Completions, operations, facilities engineering, legal, supply chain management and land.

Mr. Acuna has a Bachelor of Science in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Oklahoma. His 16 years of oil and gas experience, as a Drilling Site Manager, reservoir and production engineer, include working in Gulf of Mexico, Gulf of Thailand, Heavy oil in Venezuela. He has 6 years working with Lean Six Sigma projects and obtained his Lean Six Sigma Black Belt certification in 2017.
