Description

Abstract:             The Art of Reservoir Engineering

Art?  Surely it’s a Science!  This talk focusses on the creative aspects of Reservoir Engineering – getting away from standard workflows and customs.  We all know of solutions for pressure and flow in infinite radial reservoirs and closed circular reservoirs, etc. and these models are available in various software packages.  Unfortunately, these reservoirs rarely exist and we need to work in real reservoirs and wells.  This often means understanding the limitations of standard methods and going back to an understanding of basic physics, geology and sometimes chemistry.

The talk is illustrated with a number of examples relating to well test analysis, p/z analysis, probabilistic analysis, and how the geological model of a mature field was tipped upside down, generating a host of infill drilling opportunities.

Biography:

Henry has 38 years’ experience in Reservoir Engineering, working with companies including Esso, Cairn Energy and Oil Search. Currently with AWE. Designed courses and lectured in Exxon Production Research Co’s inaugural Reservoir Management School.

Not a plug and play guy, he loves deriving equations from first principles. Deep knowledge of reservoir flow behaviour, geology and geophysics. Can spot a dodgy assumption at 10 paces. Has worked on field developments and acquisitions in New Guinea, India, Indonesia, USA, Tunisia, Yemen, UK and China as well as most areas of Australia and New Zealand. Henry currently on long term contract with AWE providing reservoir management advice for all of AWE’s producing assets, exploration and new venture evaluations.

Key participant in the evaluation, acquisition and reservoir development planning for the Ande Ande Lumut offshore heavy oil field in Indonesia, including successful divestment of 50%. Responsible for Tui area Reservoir Development. Seconded to AWE JV partners, e.g. ROC Oil for the Cliff Head Field Reservoir Development.
