RESEARCH FRONTIERS IN THE SCIENCE
OF UNCONVENTIONAL ENERGY RESOURCES

Tuesday, March 5th, 2013
8:30 AM - 5:30 PM

Yale University Climate and Energy Institute (YCEI) and SPE New York and New England Petroleum Section recognize the need for sound earth and environmental science in development of unconventional energy resources.

The symposium will feature talks on research frontiers in the geophysical and geochemical characterization of unconventional reservoirs, in the geomechanics of hydraulic fracturing and ultra-low permeability production, and in management and protection of water resources in development of unconventional fossil fuels

C. Mark Pearson, SPE Distinguished Lecturer, President of Liberty Resources, will give the introductory keynote address, “Hydraulic Fracturing of Horizontal Wells – Realizing the Paradigm Shift that has been 30 Years in Development.“

John M. Deutch, Institute Professor, MIT,
and chair of the Secretary of Energy Advisory Board 2011 Subcommittee on Hydraulic Fracturing, will moderate a panel discussion by industry, academic and government experts on best practices in development of unconventional resources.

Invited Speakers:

Quinn Passey, ExxonMobil, “The Spectrum of Fine-grained Reservoirs from ‘Shale Gas’ to ‘Shale Oil/Tight Oil’: Geological and Petrophysical Attributes”

Carl Regone, BP, “Geophysical Models of Unconventional Reservoirs for Seismic Exploration and Microseismic Monitoring

Franz-Josef Ulm, MIT, "The Unconventional Science and Engineering of Gas Shale"

Ridvan Akkurt, Schlumberger, "Unconventionals Research: The Search for Simple Answers to a Complex Problem
"

Emmanuel Detournay, University of Minnesota, "Is Toughess Needed to Predict the Propagation of a Hydraulic Fracture?"

Tad Fox, Battelle Memorial Institute, "Lessons Learned in Baseline Water Quality Characterization and Implications for Monitoring Strategies for Unconventional Energy Resource Recovery"

Tarek Saba, Exponent, "Environmental Science of Hydraulic Fracturing: Separating the Realities from the Myths"

Avner Vengosh, Duke University, "Shale Gas Development and Hydraulic Fracturing Impacts on Water Resources"
