Abstract:

In the rapidly evolving area of data and analytics many buzz terms are used rather loosely to describe technical methods used for scientific analysis. It is good to have a working knowledge of these terms and the analysis methods they represent so that one can gain insight into new products or vendor sales pitches and the applications to an individual's work.

In this talk we will address the basic building blocks of data science and machine learning. This is aimed at an audience that is new to or may not have a technical understanding of these concepts.

Simple definitions as well as working examples will be used to illustrate the concepts. For those interested, examples in R and Python programming will be available for download as well.

Speaker Bio:

Mark grew up in Saskatoon and attended the University of Saskatchewan obtaining a Bachelors of Mechanical Engineering. He has worked for upstream and downstream companies in the energy industry over the last 12 years and is presently running a consulting firm in Calgary.
