Abstract:

Completing horizontal wells with the “Plug and Perf" style of completion has remained one of the most common methods for stimulating tight oil and gas or shale formations across North America. The use of coiled tubing, coupled with a milling bottom hole assembly has become the common method of removing these restriction’s after fracturing operations are completed. Due to inconsistent performance of these operations with today’s common “Industry Practices”, there has been a drive to re-evaluate these practices. By analyzing the first principles of debris removal in horizontal wellbores, an optimized method is proposed.

In the presentation, traditional plug milling methods are reviewed and compared with optimized methods. The fluid rheology (Reynolds number), equipment and procedures behind this optimized strategy are shared. Applying this strategy, while tracking key performance indicators has allowed the success of the optimized approach to be evaluated on wells commonly completed in the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin, these results, which amount to significant time and cost savings to the operator are shared.
