Carbon Capture Storage - The sky’s the limit when you go deep underground

Abstract:

The effects of carbon dioxide on climate change has received increasing attention and scrutiny around the world from the academics, media, governments, general public, and private industry. In Canada, specifically Alberta, we will see the implementation of the Alberta’s Climate Leadership Plan which includes a CO2 emission cap of 100 MT/yr from oil sands activities. CO2 emission can be reduced in one of two ways: by improving the recovery process to be less carbon intense, or by capturing the CO2 destined for atmospheric release and permanently storing it in a geologic formation. The latter is known as Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS).

This luncheon will cover what CCS is, how CCS fits in Alberta, the various initiatives (including the Alberta Carbon Trunk Line) in Alberta, and how they are being executed so far. The audience will also be introduced to the Quest CCS facility, a fully integrated CCS project at Shell’s Scotford Upgrader, which is currently sequestering 1.1 MT of CO2 annually. The overview will include the design and performance of the capture, wells, and reservoir (storage) conformance and containment.

Speaker Bio:

Jeff Duer, P. Eng.,is a reservoir engineer with Shell Canada supporting the Quest CCS facility. He graduated from the University of Calgary in 2002 with a degree in Chemical Engineering. Jeff’s previous employment includes CNRL, Burlington, Encana, and Sproule; his wide range of energy experience includes Exploration, Exploitation, Drilling, Reservoir, Production, Well Testing, Economics, Gas Storage, and Carbon Capture & Storage.

Jeff has been an active volunteer with the Society of Petroleum Engineers since 2003; previous roles include the Back to Basics SIG, Intersociety SIG, Social Committee, Director of Special Interest Groups, and Chairman of the Calgary Section Board.
