Abstract:

This presentation gives an overview of the development of hard rock and salt storage caverns. As the majority of caverns developed in Alberta are constructed using salt, this cavern type is discussed in more detail. Topics that will be covered include key parameters such as the selection of project location and site geology for both cavern types. This is followed by a review of process required to construct the caverns including development plans, monitoring requirements and integrity testing.

Speaker Bio:

Dale Greene, P.Eng, earned a degree in manufacturing engineering at the University of Calgary in 2000. He has 10 years of experience coordinating the cavern storage and withdrawal operations along with cavern optimization and development projects. Prior to joining Remedy, he worked as an Engineering Manager with WSP|Parsons Brinckerhoff and as a Salt Cavern Engineer with Cenovus Energy. In the role of Engineering Manager, Dale worked with numerous midstream and operating companies to deliver success on their salt cavern projects.  He currently works as a Senior Cavern Engineer and offers consulting services in the areas of leaching and storage facility design,  process optimization, drilling and completions support, project management, compliance audits and operator training.

Michael Anthony, B.Sc. Geology, earned a degree in geology at the University of Saskatchewan in 1999. He has 20 years of industry experience that include several disciplines that span mineral exploration, mining, drilling program management, and cavern development projects. Prior to joining Remedy, he worked as a Project Manager - Geology Supervisor with WSP|Parsons Brinckerhoff, a Field Project Manager with Norwest Corporation as well as a Mine Geologist with DeBeers Canada . In the role of Project Manager – Geology Supervisor, Michael worked with numerous midstream and operating companies to deliver success on their salt cavern projects.  He currently works as a Senior Geological Consultant and offers consulting services in the areas of cavern mining plan design, leaching supervision and development monitoring, drilling and completions support, project management, and cavern pre-feasibility studies.

Dylan Low, P.Eng, earned a degree in electronics engineering at one of the private universities in Malaysia 2005. He has over eight years of professional experience in engineering with the last 4 years specializing in integrity of salt caverns.  Prior to joining Remedy, Dylan worked as Project Engineer at WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff and as a Senior Wireline Field Specialist with Baker Hughes. In his last role, Dylan has undertaken more than 25+ MITs and other related cavern maintenance. He is currently working at Remedy as a Project Engineer specializing in maintenance and integrity of underground hydrocarbon storage.
