Abstract

Horizontal fracturing technology uses a substantial amount of water in order to produce oil and gas from unconventional shale plays. In order to supply this amount of water, large earthen pits (called frac ponds) are constructed to accumulate, store, and transfer enough water for frac operations. This can be especially difficult in dry climates due to the lack of availability of water sources and due to evaporative losses from frac ponds. Since the construction of these large frac ponds has come about fairly recently, there have been no public studies done on evaporative losses in frac ponds in the Permian Basin. In order to quantify the potential savings created by evaporation control technologies, this study establishes a baseline for frac ponds and small-scale models and compares the amount of evaporation reduced by different technologies.
