Bacteria will grow anywhere water can be found. Due to the large volume of water used during unconventional well completions, hydraulic fracturing operations provide ideal environments for rapid microbial proliferation and contamination – causing problems such as biofouling, microbially influenced corrosion (MIC), and souring. Microbial control programs are necessary to optimize unconventional oil and gas production in order to maintain the quality and quantity of production, asset integrity, and the overall safety of operations. To maximize microbial control efficacy, the correct biocide chemistries and technologies need to be appropriately selected and applied to provide sufficient antimicrobial performance during the different phases of the operation from top-side injection water preparation to decontamination of the well and protection of the formation.

- Problems associated with uncontrolled microbial growth
- Overview of various types of antimicrobial chemistries used in oil and gas exploration and production
- How to select the appropriate biocide(s) for hydraulic fracturing operations
Jon Raymond is a microbiologist within the Dow Microbial Control technical service organization and has provided customer support for industrial biocide applications since 2004.
Jon currently focuses on technical service and development for biocide applications in the Oil and Gas industry, but has also worked extensively in the area of new product development and technical support for biocide preservation applications in water-based materials such as coatings, building materials, household cleaners and personal care products.
Jon has authored several papers regarding biocide optimization and customization in a variety of oilfield, coating and building material water-based systems and processes. Additionally, he holds several patents for synergistic biocide applications in water-based products.
