Abstract
In 2015 Devon Energy performed nearly 200 after frac drillouts. On wells where significant operational issues were encountered, the costs increased an average of 8 to 10 fold. Later that year, Devon formed the Drill-out Group (DOGs) to study the operational issues leading to the increased costs. The team met for 8 months, investing over 1000 hours of engineering time, visiting with over a dozen vendors, making several field trips and conducting various lab experiments.
This talk will present a review of over 40 wells, examining the issues critical to the coiled tubing drillouts such as fluid systems, Reynolds number, annular velocity, chemical additive rates, viscosities, expected torque and drag, early warning signs and corrective action to prevent stuck pipe. It will also present the actions taken to improve coiled-tubing drillout operations, thereby reducing costs and increasing effectiveness.
