Abstract
The Middle East region – with 48% of the world's proven oil and 43% of proven gas resources – has an important part to play in the global energy future. The UAE has announced plans to increase oil production capacity from 2.7 million to 3.5 million barrels per day by 2017, and increase gas production from 5 billion to 6.8 billion cubic feet per day by 2020. This aspiration presents the question: “How can the UAE make the most of its existing oil and gas assets?”
Solutions are needed for managing mature assets with increasing water-cuts and water production, infrastructure nearing the end of its design life, modern HSSE standards, surface congestion issues, and multiple stakeholders with different corporate standards and philosophies.
These challenges create opportunities to develop skills and expertise in well and reservoir management, asset integrity management, asset life cycle planning, water management and disposal and enhanced oil recovery techniques.
