SPE Events

The NY and NE Section first priority is to bring together SPE resources and the specific interests of our section membership.  To do this we want to expand communications on a broad scope of subjects.  Past newsletters covered current and future events plus introductions to your new board members – which has very diverse sets of skills, industry experiences and expertise to be tapped.  However, we are more interested in highlighting every member in our Member Spotlight section.  The value of our organization is knowing fellow professionals and how to develop your capabilities in a rapidly changing energy industry.  Whether you are a student, first year employee or experienced engineer, we want to feature you in our newsletters.  Please send us a brief BIO and a picture, and tell us why you joined SPE.

We are also interested in feedback from members that we can quote to help us tune in to what you believe is important on developing your career.  This month we are starting another new feature – Member Innovations.  Please read this new section and think of what you are doing that can be shared with the membership in both the newsletter summary and white

papers for our section web site library.   And, maybe we can make your innovation a presentation or a section webinar in the future.  This is something we hope to start soon so we can share more expertise across the section at a faster pace – this is one of our new International President Egbert Imomoh’s priorities in 2012-2013.

And finally we do believe in social events and the Cambridge river cruise in June was a big success.   We not only had the best atmosphere for meeting new SPE members – we also enabled many opportunities to gain feedback and play match-maker in introducing members who wanted to share industry/career interests.

System for International Logistics Services Innovations on Major Energy Industry Projects - "Bridging the Gaps"

By Jim Stevens, Optima Technologies

Are you involved in an innovation and/or project to implement new technology with an urgent deadline? Does it require relocation of equipment? You may be interested in new logistics planning and tracking systems.
Optima Technologies has been developing information systems to “bridge the gaps” in communication so that equipment for major projects can be relocated and shipped anywhere in the world to meet the changing plans.
We were partnered with energy industry experts for 7 years beginning with the AGIP consortium of the top 10 oil companies set up to build out the largest oil find in the world today in the North Caspian sea in Kasakhstan.  The system got its feeds from KBR on what equipment needed to be relocated and built.  Our new tools enabled the planning and tracking of every shipment through every move and stop to minimize the effects of surprises.  This is possible by sharing timely status data and alerts with the front line project leads and schedulers across the globe.
On major projects companies outsource their logistics function because of the peak demand for logistics tracking tasks (purchase orders can contain hundreds or thousands of line items on new builds).  However, the third party logistics (3PL) providers often lack the tools to outsource the planning and tracking work - they are more focused on just finding carriers at a competitive cost - which is their core expertise and primary deliverable.
This is what we call a GAP in the 3PL capabilities and teh tools to manage logistics and get material to the site on schedule ... and adapt to daily changes. (Please refer to your NY and NE SPE Section Library for the white paper)

A white paper by Jim Stevens on Logistics Management is available to section members in the SPE NYNE website/library

Member Spotlight – Harold David Leslie (Microseismic Matters LLC)

Harold David Leslie (MicroSeismic Matters LLC) Member since 1987

David Leslie is an independent researcher/consultant working through MBO Partners and through MicroSeismic Matters LLC which he established after retiring from Schlumberger in the U.K. in July 2011. Over the course of a long career with Schlumberger he worked largely in sonic and microseismic R&E, holding engineering positions in Houston, Texas, and Fuchinobe, Japan, and research positions in Ridgefield, Connecticut, and Cambridge, England. He started his career as a Junior Field Engineer at Schlumberger Offshore Services in Houston, and also worked in Interpretation Development at ATL Marketing  in Montrouge, France. Prior to joining Schlumberger David worked as a research assistant at the Woods Hole   Oceanographic Institution (WHOI). He received the degrees of BSEE from Princeton University in 1969, MS from MIT, and Ocean Engineer from MIT and WHOI in 1978. He has co-authored patents in the areas of cement evaluation, sonic tool design and microseismic processing. Since retiring and returning to the USA David has remained active in SEG, EAGE and SPE, serving occasionally and voluntarily as a paper reviewer and an attendee of conferences and workshops. His principle focus remains induced seismicity, but he is using his “considerably freer time” to more widely explore topics related to energy and environment
