Topic: Converting Liabilities into Assets: Rehabilitating Aging Infrastructure using Steel-Reinforced Thermoplastic Pipe for Carbon Capture Applications Abstract: Rapidly aging oil and gas infrastructure is forcing operators to seek creative ways to maintain pipeline integrity with minimal capital investment and interruption to production. Relying upon its own inherent strength and mechanical properties, flexible steel pipe uses the existing infrastructure as a conduit and does not rely on the integrity of the host pipe for future operation. This presentation highlights the successful rehabilitation of a regulated steel line with flexible steel pipe. Speaker Bio: David Gregory, PE is the Technical Services Engineering Manager for FlexSteel Pipeline Technologies. David is a subject matter expert on maximization of operating efficiencies using spoolable reinforced composite pipelines, providing technical advice to customers, regulatory agencies, and sales personnel. David is a former Facilities Engineer for an upstream operator and holds a Petroleum Engineering degree from Texas A&M University and a Master of Energy Business degree from the University of Tulsa. Shawn Poworoznik is the Pipeline Rehabilitation Specialist for FlexSteel Pipeline Technologies. Shawn is a subject matter expert on using pipe in pipe methodology to rehabilitate and re-purpose existing pipeline infrastructure. His role is to evaluate, engineer and assist in execution of pipe in pipe projects around the world. Shawn is a former pipeline inspector for a major oil and gas operator and holds several designations for pipeline inspection with a strong focus on corrosion. These include API 1169, Welding inspection 2, Coating inspection 3, Cathodic protection inspection 3 and Corrosion Specialist 4. Bio: Tom Emelander is the Product Line Manager for Weatherford’s Whipstock Systems. His early career focused on support and implementation of Casing Exit Technologies. After gaining operational experience, he was elevated to Technical Specialist where he guided his team to significant improvements in service quality. His recent role is focused on increasing efficiencies, developing new technologies, and working with operators on highly innovative re-entry projects including multiple industry first installations. Regarded as a subject matter expert, he has authored multiple technical papers and industry articles. Tom has a Mechanical Engineering degree from Western Michigan University. Abstract: Sidetracking with Whipstocks: An Efficient Method for Increasing Your Operational and Asset Value As the demand increases to lower overall cost of accessing reserves, more reliable operations during the well construction process are required and refined methods for maximizing the value of existing assets must be considered. In drilling operations, there are numerous reasons why sidetracking may be a planned or contingency event. Additionally, many if not all, fields have existing assets that can potentially be utilized to reestablish or increase production while reducing cost and footprint associated with a new drill. One option of sidetracking a well involves a ramp directionally anchored in the casing or open hole to create a window for future drilling and completion assemblies. Whipstock sidetracking has evolved as a viable solution to add operational value in both new and mature wells. Through technological advances, whipstock operations have become more efficient and can cover most applications for new drills and re-entries. With additional evolutions in drilling capabilities and more complex wellbore design, sidetracking in casing or open hole can provide an economical advantage over traditional contingency solutions. From an overall cost per foot perspective, multilateral and re-entry projects can reduce the operational spend to access additional reserves while reducing the environmental footprint. With extensive run history and ever-increasing developments in equipment, competency, and data driven analytics, the scope and success for whipstock sidetracking operations provides operators with lower risk options to further industry optimization. This presentation will focus on identification of applications and methods to increase operational efficiency in the process of drilling and completing wells along with recovering stranded production in existing fields.

Agenda: 18:00 Welcome and ice breaker 18:30 Presentation and Q&A 19:15 to 21:00 Dinner, drinks and networking Title : Repurposing Oil and Gas Wells to Geothermal Wells Abstract : The number of abandoned oil and gas wells are growing over millions, significant costs are imposed to companies and the government for decommissioning these wells. However, it would be very encouraging for the oil and gas industry to take advantage of these wells and use them as a source of geothermal energy. Huge upfront costs have always been a major obstacle for the development of geothermal energy. As a rule of thumb, a quarter of the costs for harvesting geothermal energy goes toward drilling and one-third of the costs are spent on completions. One obvious solution is avoiding these costs by repurposing existing oil and gas wells to generate geothermal power at the end of their economic production life. In some regions of extensive hydrocarbon explorations, the geothermal gradient can be very steep, providing potential well candidates for conversion. Considering the local energy demand, potential market, existing infrastructure, and technical challenges, a conversion strategy for the existing wells is discussed, especially in terms of the wellbore integrity requirement and steps to ensure hydrocarbon containment during the heat extraction process. Distinguished Lecturer Arash Dahi Taleghani discusses potential challenges in inspection and preparation of these wells in terms of well integrity and productivity with possible remedies. Bio : Dr. Arash Dahi Taleghani is a tenured associate professor of petroleum engineering at Pennsylvania State University. Before joining Penn State, he was an associate professor of Petroleum Engineering at Louisiana State University. He earned his Ph.D. in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin. He has about 12 years combined experience in applied engineering, research and in academia and is a registered professional engineer. Dr. Dahi Taleghani is the associate editor of ASME journal of Energy Resources and Technology and has numerous publications and six patent applications in the field of drilling and completion. In 2014, he received the Distinguished Achievement Award for Petroleum Engineering Faculty from the Society of Petroleum Engineering (SPE). He has also received SPE Eastern North America Regional Completion Optimization and Technology in 2017.   • CCS - Reservoir Engineering Perspectives

    Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) is a lot harder than it seems. Storage capacity can be far lower than a back-of-the-envelope calculation would suggest and keeping Carbon Dioxide (CO2) in the desired phase requires careful engineering. As the adoption of carbon pricing mechanisms increase in Asia Pacific, more CCS projects are expected to be developed. In this paper, we share some technical lessons learned while working on several of these projects. The paper provides an overview of factors that should be considered for CO2 storage in depleted hydrocarbon reservoirs, primarily concerning capacity, injectivity and containment. We further discuss some of the challenges faced while assessing these factors. Firstly, we highlight the impact that regional geothermal gradients have on storage site selection. Particularly, we show that higher geothermal gradients due to the proximity to the ring of fire affects CO2 capacity negatively and CO2 injectivity positively. Building on this lesson, we propose a graphical approach which provides improved insights when screening depleted reservoirs for CO2 storage; the approach combines both density and viscosity data to screen reservoirs for capacity and injectivity. Next, challenges surrounding the dynamic modelling of CO2 injection into depleted reservoirs are discussed. We compare the use of large and small scale models, and their implications on simulation accuracy and well placement optimization. We also discuss simulation stopping techniques, and how the incorrect application of a stopping criterion may result in capacity overestimation and risk of CO2 leakage. Finally, we demonstrate the need for careful engineering at injection sites to accommodate complicated CO2 phase transitions. Two approaches were compared – injecting CO2 in liquid or supercritical state versus injecting CO2 in gas state. The trade-offs between both approaches suggested that neither options should be ruled out by default, and that both options should be evaluated against project specific constraints. Daniel Wong is a Reservoir Engineer with GaffneyCline. He holds a PhD from Heriot-Watt University where he has been working on advanced applications in reservoir simulation. At GaffneyCline he is part of the excellent technical team in charge of O&G reserves and resources assessment, due diligence, and data analytics. Topic: A Leadership Approach to Management Abstract: This lecture offers a discussion of perceptions of management and leadership, and how the ability to manage is augmented through leadership. The talk is very beneficial for employees, employees who want to become managers, and current managers who wish to become future effective leaders. Although leadership training has become popular in recent years, it seems that lack of proper practice has diminished its impact on management effectiveness resulting in a persistent poor employee engagement at the workplace. While managers plan, organize, and measure value, leader managers take the additional steps of inspiring, motivating, enabling, and adding value. It will be shown that the key to success for an organization is to transform its managers to leader managers through the ongoing process of soft competency learning followed by effective soft capable practicing. A new Leadership-Management model which offers a new leadership approach to management is introduced and explained. Speaker Bio: Dr. Behrooz Fattahi holds Ph.D. degrees in Aerospace Engineering and in Mechanical Engineering from Iowa State University. After 37 years of working in the industry, he retired from Aera Energy LLC, an affiliate of Royal Dutch Shell and ExxonMobil companies in 2014. In his last position as the Learning Advisor, he taught internal company technical courses including topics on reservoir engineering and enhanced oil recovery. He served as the Executive Editor of the SPE Reservoir Evaluation and Engineering Journal, President of SPE Americas, VP-Finance, and SPE Foundation Vice President. He also served as a member of the United States National Petroleum Council. He is the recipient of AIME/SPE’s DeGolyer Medal for Distinguished Service, AIME’s Presidential Citation, recognized by SPE as a “Distinguished Member”, “A Peer Apart,” and elected as AIME/SPE’s “Honorary Member.” He was a 2018-2019 SPE “Distinguished Lecturer.” Dr. Fattahi was elected as the 2010 President of SPE International, and as the 2014 President of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers. He is now the President of the EnerTrain Institute, providing petroleum heavy oil training and consulting as well as lectures, and workshops on soft competencies internationally. What role do we as petroleum engineers have in delivering low carbon energy to the world?     The London SPE Net Zero Gaia committee, in association with their SPE Europe geothermal colleagues, is excited to invite you to this coffee hour chat where they will discuss two ongoing UK geothermal projects: United Downs and BODYHEAT. The speakers for this coffee hour include Hazel Farndale , business manager for Geothermal Engineering Ltd, who oversees GEL’s research and consulting activity on geothermal projects in the UK and globally, and specifically the deep geothermal United Downs project in Cornwall. She will be joined by David Townsend , founder and CEO of TownRock Energy , a geothermal consultancy out of Scotland focused on helping their clients unlock their geologic assets to eliminate waste and carbon emissions. About the talks: Hazel will provide insight into multiple resource geothermal energy development in Cornwall and across the UK. She will discuss the current barriers to the development of the geothermal industry in the UK and the support needed from the government, local planning authorities, and local communities to make the industry viable. Finally, she will touch on the industry’s opportunity to create thousands of green jobs, especially those utilizing skills developed in the oil & gas industry. David will then provide an overview of the work TownRock is doing towards developing geothermal resources in the UK. He will discuss the cost of waste heat and how thermal energy storage can be deployed at varying scales to both combat its negative effects and become a net zero energy source. He will finish by talking about BODYHEAT, an innovative project out of Glasgow in which the heat produced by club goers is stored in surrounding bedrock and later used to reduce the building’s overall carbon emissions.   • A Cool Way to Store Carbon Dioxide via Clathrate Hydrates

    Climate change is known to be dominantly caused by the increased concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, particularly carbon dioxide (CO2). Over the years, the clathrate hydrate process has demonstrated promising potential for innovative applications, such as natural gas storage, carbon dioxide capture and storage, seawater desalination, and cold energy storage. CO2 hydrate, a solid compound consisting of molecular CO2 encased in crystalline lattices formed by water molecules, is an attractive option for long-term CO2 sequestration. Methane (CH4) hydrates in oceanic sediments have remained stable for millions of years, serving as a natural analog. Thus, the question arises: can we store CO2 in the form of hydrates in oceanic sediments indefinitely? In this presentation, the state-of-the-art on clathrate hydrate technology pertaining to carbon dioxide storage will be discussed in detail. Compact CO2 storage capacity, high stability, and the use of water as a solvent are key advantages of the hydrate-based CO2 storage system. Additionally, future research and development opportunities, as well as pathways for commercialization, will be explored.     ¿Qué puedes llevarte de nuestro webinar?. La Petrofísica de alta calidad técnica se utiliza para encontrar zonas prospectivas y objetivos de perforación con el mayor potencial de producción de hidrocarburos. Los yacimientos no convencionales requieren volver a revisar intervalos penetrados por pozos viejos con hidrocarburos "bypasseados" en rocas madre, ricas en materia orgánica y arenas duras, económicamente inviables para entonces. Nuestro ponente revisará varios métodos petrofísicos para evaluar los recursos de hidrocarburos en yacimientos no convencionales con tecnología de vanguardia y explicará un flujo de trabajo práctico para producir un modelo petrofísico. Igualmente, nos presentará un modelado en yacimientos no convencionales en América del Norte y del Sur. Este enfoque práctico, una vez implementado, puede ser realizado por un geocientífico como un flujo de trabajo automatizado rápido para generar mapas de zonas prospectivas, localizar las zonas con el “lomito” de producción e identificar los mejores bancos para la colocación de pozos horizontales y la distribución de éstos en varios yacimientos. ¿Quién es nuestro ponente? Jesús M. Salazar, Licenciado en Física de la UCV, obtuvo su MsC. y PhD de UT en Austin. Operational synergies between the capture facility (supply) and CO2-EOR (demand) also require excess CO2 to be transported via pipeline to the Aquistore site where it is injected into a hyper-saline fluid filled sandstone formation at approximately 3300 m depth. The reservoir temperature is approximately 120 °C, and average reservoir pressure is 35 MPa. Preliminary laboratory measurements on core plugs gave average values of porosity and permeability, 6% and 5 mD respectively. The Aquistore site includes one injection well and one observation well approximately 150m offset from the injection well. Both wells are completed with various measurement and monitoring equipment, including distributed temperature sensing lines (DTS), distributed acoustic sensing line (DAS) and tubing/casing-conveyed pressure gauges at different levels to measure pressure and temperature changes downhole during to CO2 injection. This presentation focuses on dynamic responses that have been recorded since the completion of the CO2 injection well and the start of CO2 injection began on April 16, 2015 and discusses issues ranging from well integrity to reservoir simulation to seismic monitoring. This unprecedented opportunity to collect monitoring data on the dynamics of phase changes (i.e. supercritical to liquid to gas phase shifts) from the wellhead to the geological formation associated with CO2 injection. Real time monitoring data of these phase changes in the injection stream under fully integrated operational conditions provides unparalleled information for understanding geological storage under these conditions and optimizing completion systems Biography: Rick Chalaturnyk is a Professor of Geotechnical Engineering at the University of Alberta and holds an NSERC/Energi Simulation Industrial Research Chair in Reservoir Geomechanics. His Reservoir Geomechanics Research Group focusses primarily on subsurface processes related to energy processes. He has established four unique GeoInnovation Environments, which includes 3D printing of rocks, high temperature/pressure reservoir geomechanical testing capability and a geotechnical beam centrifuge.     Society of Petroleum Engineers Distinguished Lecturer Transforming How to Evaluate Wells and Unlock Reserves: Deep Transient Testing François-Xavier Dubost SLB 18:00 06 October 2023 BELGO, 159A Nguyen Van Thu, Q1 Abstract: Dynamic data, acquired using wireline formation testing or well testing techniques, are used by operators to address uncertainties associated with reserve estimates and productivity, while rationalizing field development and production costs. However, these evaluation techniques provide dynamic data at different length scales, and with different environmental footprint, cost, and operational constraints. To help reduce development risks, a Deep Transient Testing (DTT) technique was developed in response to an industry and customer need in 2015 and has been used since then by many oil companies. The method is a hybrid technique between wireline formation testing and Drill Stem Testing (DST) designed to meet local regulatory requirements to unlock reserves. It is based on innovations with higher resolution measurements, pumping of large fluid volumes on wireline at higher rates, extending testing time and circulating the produced fluids out of the well for safety and well control, without the requirement for surface flaring. These features enable dynamic reservoir characterization in thicker formations, higher permeabilities and with much deeper volume of investigation than previously available. Pressure transient testing and sampling results from DTT technique is now becoming an important component in operating companies’ reservoir evaluation programs. The DTT technique is embedded in a digital framework to provide early reservoir fluids models and reservoir insights coupled to geological models, so that well deliverability and prospect commerciality can be evaluated. DTT also aligns with global sustainable development goals, by enabling reductions in CO2 emissions by up to 96% percent, and offering high operational efficiency compared with other wireline formation testing systems to significantly reduce energy consumption. Biography: Francois-Xavier Dubost focused for 27 years on reservoir performance evaluation and recently joined the SLB HQ team as Reservoir Technical Director. Graduated from Herriot Watt University with an MSc in Reservoir Evaluation and Management, Francois has been looking at all angles of reservoir engineering topics from acquisition to interpretation and incorporation of the measurements into field models. He recently dedicated his interests in the field of Deep Transient Testing, introducing this topic to the industry with the first published papers, presenting it in different expert meetings and lectures, and acting as a leader internationally to develop this new technique.     Retrofit Thru-tubing Deep Gas Lift - A Case Study from Brunei Scott Gutleber & Threedhases Jiamjarasrungsi Weatherford 02 November 2023 BELGO - Q1 HCMC Abstract Scott and Nat will present a case study for a shut-in offshore oil producer in Brunei with multiple tubing leaks. An innovative thru-tubing retrofit gas lift system was installed, isolating the leaks and allowing for lift gas injection below the production packer. The gas lift valve was placed 200 m TVD deeper than the lowermost side pocket mandrel, enabling production from a deeper depth than would be possible using conventional gas lift. Within four hours of starting lift gas injection, the well was flowing steadily with 900 kPa of FWHP. This cost-effective approach helped the operator avoid an expensive workover and maximize production potential. Biographies Threedhases Jiamjarasrungsi (Nat) is Operations Manager at Weatherford with over 12 years of experience in artificial lift and production solutions in Thailand, Myanmar, and Vietnam.     Overview Natural gas hydrate deposits are found on all active and passive continental margins as well as in permafrost regions and deep lakes. Their worldwide occurrence and the large quantities of natural gas they contain make them appear to be both an energy source and a potential climate factor. In order to use the methane bound in gas hydrate deposits in the most climate-neutral way possible, it has been proposed to combine the extraction of natural gas from the gas hydrates with the injection of CO2: The methane gas trapped in the gas hydrates is to be replaced by CO2. In recent years, a large number of experimental and numerical simulations have been performed to understand the interaction between injected CO2 and the hydrate-bearing sediment. This webinar summarizes the main results and highlights the challenges and potential opportunities of the method. At the University of Potsdam, she teaches the subjects of environmental chemistry, analytics, and the fundamentals and applications of clathrate hydrates. Moderator: Aziz Rahman Dr. Aziz Rahman is an Associate Professor in the Petroleum Engineering Program at Texas A&M University - Qatar (TAMUQ). Before his appointment at TAMUQ, he was a faculty member at the Memorial University of Newfoundland and an Instructor at the University of Alberta, Canada. Dr. Rahman received his Ph.D. from the University of Alberta, Canada, in 2010.     Position: Chairperson Candidate: Aditi Chakrabarti (Schlumberger-Doll Research) Short Bio: Dr. Aditi Chakrabarti is a Senior Research Scientist at Schlumberger-Doll Research. She works on sensing technologies for decarbonization in the Oil & Gas industry at SDR. She was previously a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the group of Professor L. Mahadevan in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) at Harvard University until late 2021, following which she joined Schlumberger. Prior to her postdoc at Harvard, she received a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering in 2017 from Lehigh University, working in the group of Professor Manoj K. Chaudhury. Her background is in fluids and solids, and she has worked on scientific problems ranging from understanding failure of soft materials, adhesion, instabilities, and pattern formation. She received her Bachelor of Technology degree in Chemical Engineering from West Bengal University of Technology in Kolkata, India in 2012. Position: Secretary Candidate: Nermeen Saadoun (Aramco Research Center – Boston) Short Bio: Nermeen Saadoun is a Lab Scientist within the Reservoir Engineering Technology Team at the Aramco Boston Research Center. Position: Program chairperson Candidate: Tetsushi Yamada (Schlumberger-Doll Research) Short Bio: Tetsushi Yamada is a Senior Research Scientist and a Program Manager at the Schlumberger-Doll Research (SDR) Center, Cambridge, MA. He has more than 12 years of experience in developing computational solutions to solve image data interpretation problems for subsurface characterization. After receiving a master’s degree in Earth Sciences and Environmental Engineering from Waseda University in Tokyo, Japan in 2011, he joined SLB as an Interpretation Development Engineer at Schlumberger Riboud Product Center in Clamart, France. During his assignment in France, his focus was the computational method development for interpreting both Wireline and LWD borehole image data. His solutions were commercialized in GeoFrame and Techlog. In 2020, he moved to SDR to support the development of new interpretation workflow for drilled cuttings image analysis and 2D gas chromatography analysis. He recently joined the Emission and Sensing program as a Program Manager to support the development of methods for interpreting sensor data for methane emission detection. He has written 10+ publications, 10+ patents, as well as book chapters on borehole imaging and data science applications in Geophysical Exploration Handbook published by Society of Exploration Geophysicists. He is a member of SPE. Position: Communication chairperson Candidate: Sangcheol Yoon (Schlumberger-Doll Research) Short Bio: Dr. Sangcheol Yoon joined SDR in November 2022 as a research scientist. Before joining SDR, He was a postdoctoral scholar in the Department of Hydrogeology at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. He received Ph.D. in petroleum engineering from Texas A&M University in 2021. He completed his Bachelor’s degree in architectural engineering from Yonsei University in 2013 and Master’s degree from The University of Oklahoma in 2017. He has been working at the forefront of various aspects of coupled-physics THMC modeling processes which are computationally and numerically challenging problems in the subsurface, which include fault reactivation/slip in carbon capture storage, geological disposal of high-level radioactive wastes, wellbore stability analysis in gas hydrate deposit, fracture propagation in shale reservoir, and their machine learning applications. Position: Membership/Awards chairperson Candidate: Khaled Nabil Hashad (Exponent Inc.) Short Bio: Khaled is a senior associate in the thermal science practice at Exponent. He specializes in areas of mechanical engineering, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), heat transfer, and aerosol science. His work at Exponent entails performing failure analysis and prevention for mechanical systems, root cause investigations of fires and explosions, and helping clients solve thermal and fluids related problems. Prior to joining Exponent, Khaled was a PhD Candidate in the Mechanical and Aerospace Department at Cornell University working in the Energy and the Environment lab. Position: Young Professional chairperson Candidate: Mengqi Shen (Aramco Research Center – Boston) Short Bio: Mengqi Shen joined Aramco in April of 2023 as a lab scientist in the RETB team. Previously, he worked as a postdoctoral fellow at Columbia University, where he focused on developing new nanomaterials and technologies for hydrogen application and CCUS. He obtained his Ph.D. in chemistry from Brown University where he conducted research on nanomaterials and catalysis. Position: Officer for Sustainability Candidate: Richa Sharma (Schlumberger-Doll Research) Short Bio: Dr. Richa Sharma is currently a program manager leading the effort of Carbon Capture at Schlumberger-Doll Research (SDR). She earned her PhD in chemical engineering and a minor in electrical engineering in 2010 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. From 2011-2012, she was a postdoctoral researcher at DOE-sponsored Molecular Foundry located at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL). Before she joined SDR, she studied charge transfer properties of carbon nanomaterials and inorganic chemistry of semiconducting materials.     We are pleased to welcome Chad Senters as our guest speaker for March. Chad will be presenting "Feature-Driven Interactions: Near-Wellbore Strategies and Basin Benchmarking Metrics" ABSTRACT Parent-child (primary to infill) relationships continue to be a major influence in drilling and completions decisions. This presentation covers the intricacies of reservoir dynamics as it relates to Fracture Driven Interactions (FDI’s) and inter-well communication. Depletion from Parent well production continues to be a driving force in predicting fracture driven interactions; however, this is not always the case. The concept of Feature-Driven Interactions (FDIs) is introduced as a classification of geologic-driven interactions. Insight into Feature Driven Interactions as they relate to parent-child interactions is provided by integrating geomechanical data spanning the lateral, along with diagnostic results captured post-fracturing. Quantification and comparative analysis of inter-well communication is included in the case studies using diagnostic metrics. Within this suite of metrics, the "communication intensity" metric compares the reservoir connectivity assessment amongst projects within the basin. This empowers strategic field development decisions through actionable data. Bio Chad Senters is the US Sales Manager for the ProTechnics division of Core Laboratories specializing in completion, production, and reservoir diagnostics. Chad’s extensive experience in the oil and gas industry including stimulation, coiled tubing and downhole tools in addition to completion, production, and reservoir diagnostics. Chad is a graduate of the Missouri University of Science and Technology (formerly the University of Missouri Rolla) with a BS in Chemical Engineering and graduate certificate in Management and Leadership. Senters is an active member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) and has held a variety of section officer positions including Section Chair and is currently serving as SPE GCS Westside Study Group Chair. Senters is a past recipient the SPE Outstanding Young Member Service Award and the Production and Operations Technical Award for the Mid-Continent Region. He has published and presented numerous papers at the SPE HFTC and ATCE and is an active contributor in several SPE Applied Technology Workshops.     PLEASE RSVP BELOW A kick or an influx may be defined as an unintended flow of formation fluid into the borehole. It occurs when the wellbore pressure falls below the formation pore pressure. Not all kicks are dangers; however, an uncontrolled kick can lead to catastrophic events. A reliable early kick detection and monitoring system is critical to maintaining wellbore stability. Typically, the gain in pit volume and change in flow rate serve as some of the primary kick indicators. Secondary indicators include borehole pressure, temperature, resistivity, mud properties, and cuttings. While the gain in pit volume can indicate the kick with higher reliability, the downhole measurements in conjunction with high-speed telemetry and advanced real-time processing algorithms can be an effective early warning system, enabling timely mitigation plans. This lecture begins with some basics of wellbore stability, kick indicators, and monitoring systems. Various downhole sensor measurements and their relevance to kick detection are discussed. Both experimental and field examples are presented to illustrate the methodology. Pressure data are analyzed to estimate change in density and correlate it with the type, location, and evolution of the influx along the wellbore. Some innovative ideas on sensor design and realtime data processing for event detection and uncertainty quantification are discussed. One key message from this lecture: Kicks can be catastrophic, but recent and future developments in sensor technology, data processing, and telemetry are enabling timely identification and mitigation plans.

    Title: Tips for a Successful Presentation and Presence in the Oil and Gas Industry Abstract: I’ve competed in high school and university speaking competitions, and I’ve placed nationally in these competitions. I’ve won the international student paper contest in 2015 at ATCE over my Devon reservoir engineering internship. I’ve been coached by communication majors for twelve years in high school and university. This talk is to cover my experiences in presentations and what kind of tips you can pick up in technical presentations that can make for an impactful message. Content in the presentation will cover psychological reasons as to how these presentation tips can be effective in giving a message. Scope of this presentation will be how to develop a mindset for an effective presentation, tips during the presentation, and reflection and practicing tips. I may not be perfect, but these are the tips that have helped me to make impactful presentations and memorable messages. Speaker Bio : Yogashri Pradhan is an Operations Performance Analyst at Chevron. She was previously a reservoir engineer for Coterra. At Coterra, she is involved with field development planning in the Delaware Basin unconventional reservoirs. Prior to that, she worked as a reservoir engineer at Endeavor energy Resources. At Endeavor, she was involved with field development planning for unconventionals in the Midland Basin. Most recently, she has been honored as a distinguished alumni from the University of Texas Petroleum Engineering Department and Hart Energy’s 40 Under 40. She is the recipient of the Regional Reservoir Engineering Dynamics and Description and the Regional Service Awards in 2020. She's also the recipient of Houston Engineers Week Young Engineer of the Year representing SPE-Gulf Coast Section for 2018 and the International Young Member Outstanding Service Award from SPE in 2018. Yogashri graduated from the University of Texas with a Bachelor's in Petroleum Engineering in 2015 and received her Masters in Petroleum Engineering at Texas A&M University in 2020.     Enhancing Interpretation of Diagnostic Data Using Near-Wellbore Measurements Abstract The continual advancement in the number and quality of diagnostic tools has brought about significant improvements in their utilizations, though the information derived from these tools often still lacks straightforward interpretation. While tracer data is insightful for assessing zonal isolation, there arises a challenge when data indicates the absence of isolation, prompting the next question… why? Is it geology or parent-child related? Image logs can identify fractures, but how can you determine which fractures might be productive? Furthermore, variations in cluster and perforation behaviors, and/or the occurrence of well-to-well communication in some stages and not others, pose additional questions. Fracture diagnostics are an essential part of understanding the impact of completion designs on fracture development. However, more often than not, there are variations in geology from stage to stage, cluster to cluster, and even foot to foot that make each stage unique. This variation can often confuse or even obscure the ultimate goal of the diagnostics in evaluating varying completion parameters. This presentation reviews the significance of incorporating near-wellbore properties as an integral addition to other diagnostics, and how drilling data can be used to characterize the rock being drilled. The talk will review multiple instances where near-wellbore properties, including rock strength and the presence of pre-existing depleted fractures, provided crucial context to various diagnostic data such as RA tracers, image logs, microseismic, pumping data, surface seismic, and fiber optics. A framework detailing the utilization of near-wellbore properties to best construct a robust completions testing plan will also be discussed. Bio Bill Katon serves as the Chief Petrophysicist at Drill2Frac, a company that leverages existing drilling data to provide near-wellbore rock properties and fluid distribution modeling for wells. With an extensive background spanning three decades in the oilfield services sector, Bill oversees service delivery, product development, and business expansion of Drill2Frac solutions within the unconventional market. Before joining Drill2Frac, Bill held various roles at Schlumberger, ranging from wireline operations and management to sales, account management, and petrophysics. Possessing a BS degree in Ocean Engineering from Florida Atlantic University, Bill brings a wealth of knowledge to the field.

    Presented by Anton Shchipanov (NORCE – Norwegian Research Centre, Stavanger, Norway) Abstract: Automated well operations is a rapidly growing area with recent progress in automated drilling extending now into automated well monitoring and control during production operations. In reservoir engineering, although the industry continues to guide decision making processes mainly based on physics-based models and simulations, the focus of further developments of the industrial workflows has shifted towards hybrid solutions incorporating machine learning and big data analytics. Development of such solutions requires new approaches to integrate the reservoir physics into the workflows suitable for machine learning and big data analytics. We present one of such hybrid solutions focused on well monitoring using pressure and rate measurements with permanent gauges and flowmeters. Data-driven methods employed for data preprocessing like automated pressure transient identification and recognition of patterns in time - lapse pressure responses are combined with physics-informed methods used to evaluate well performance. Application of this hybrid workflow is illustrated with well examples from the Norwegian Continental Shelf. Potential application areas of this automated workflow include analysis of big well datasets already accumulated in the industry, on-the-fly data interpretation with real-time alarming of performance issues as well as providing input data for full-field reservoir simulations. Biography: Dr. Anton Shchipanov is a chief scientist at NORCE (Norwegian Research Centre) in Stavanger, Norway. Anton has been participating and managing R&D and consultancy projects for 20+ years and is a co-author of 30+ papers published. His research interests include well and reservoir monitoring and simulation within oil and gas, geological carbon storage and geothermal energy.

    For our April meeting, we welcome Mr. Charles Bourgeois from DarkVision Technologies who will be presenting " Validating Efficient Completion Design through Advanced Perforation Analysis ", a novel virtual unplugging methodology enabled by highly accurate and validated entry-hole measurements, as well as other insights gained from the aggregate analysis of the world’s largest calibration perforation dataset. Abstract High-resolution acoustic imaging technology provides operators with the ability to extract submillimetric measurements of perforations at any depth into a casing wall. Owing to its 3D nature, submillimetric acoustic data permits the extraction of highly accurate area-based measurements at any radial distance into a perforation, with key distances at the inner and outer casing boundaries. This novel technology is fluid agnostic and unaffected by the opacity or clarity of the fluid. The robust 3D measurement capabilities of the platform have made it an ideal means to evaluate casings and perforations in challenging environments such as hydraulically fractured wells. The integration of high-resolution acoustic imaging into numerous operators’ hydraulic fracture and completions evaluation workflows has resulted in a highly insightful aggregate submillimetric perforation dataset. This large dataset has led to the development of a method that can virtually unplug perforations using a well-specific “perforation entry- and exit-hole area correlation.” The established correlation can only be extracted using acoustic-based imaging, as it requires submillimetric resolution of both the inner diameter (ID) and outer diameter (OD) profiles of each perforation. Using this correlation, the resulting set of post-frac perforation exit-hole measurements improves the operator’s ability to complete a holistic well completion evaluation, even when the perforations are plugged due to unfavorable well conditions. The outcome is improved operational insight owing to the ability to directly compare stages with plugged perforations to those without. This approach can be applied at any point in the well’s life cycle, allowing operators to revisit assessments and virtually unplug obscured and proppant-filled perforations. The methodology requires sound baseline knowledge of the downhole perforating charges performance. The baseline is typically obtained through a calibration stage, which is a stage of charges that are shot but left unstimulated to provide control measurements for a specific charge under the given well conditions. The current industry performance of downhole perforating charges is investigated using an aggregated dataset of calibration charges. To validate this solid-state acoustic imaging technology and demonstrates its high degree of accuracy for entry- and exit-hole perforation measurements, machined samples were scanned using this technology and with a metrology-grade laser scanner for comparison. Bio Charles is the US Sales Director for DarkVision Technologies. Graduating from LSU with a bachelor’s in mechanical engineering, Charles began his career as a field engineer with Baker Hughes. He worked across the business in various roles such as product manager and account manager. Since joining DarkVision, Charles has been instrumental in advancing the answers derived from acoustic based imaging including entry hole analysis, volumetric proppant calculations, and more. Charles has helped to publish numerous SPE papers and has provided deep insight for his clients and their challenges.

  • Waterflood Optimization by Data Analytics on Mature Fields-Accelerated the Field Developing Process

    Currently, 70 percent of global oil is being produced from mature fields. The waterflood process is widely used to improve the oil recovery of mature fields. Unlocking the potential of existing mature assets and the optimization of waterflooding can be challenging using traditional dynamic modeling workflows due to high well count, years of historical production data (extensive data set), complex stratigraphy, etc.; however, these challenges create opportunities for applying data-driven techniques. In addition, increased attention towards reducing carbon emissions makes data-driven techniques more attractive as they are computationally-light techniques. First, this work reviews classical analytics for studying the waterflood process; after that, machine learning techniques are used to optimize rates of water injector wells for maximizing the production efficiency. Next, an innovative hybrid physics-guided data-driven method is presented to accelerate field development and locate the remaining oil (LTRO) process from months to weeks. The results of this new workflow are validated against outputs of the numerical simulation and 4D seismic info. Furthermore, the comparison of post drilling results and predictions of the new physics-guided data-driven workflow is presented for a field located in the Middle East. This presentation demonstrates that it is now possible to deliver digital LTRO projects, capturing the full uncertainty ranges, including complex multi-vintage spatial 4D datasets, and providing reliable non-simulation physics-compliant data-driven production forecasts within weeks. This presentation addresses the challenge of reducing mature fields study resource intensity and therefore, time and costs whilst maintaining a high degree of fidelity.

  • How to Leverage What We’ve Learned About Hydraulic Fractures

    Abstract: Understanding how hydraulic fractures propagate, where the proppant ends up, and how they connect with the reservoir is fundamental to designing effective development strategies. While rock properties vary across basins, the physics of fracture mechanics is consistent, allowing learnings from one region to extend to others. In the last five years, the quality and quantity of subsurface diagnostics has driven a rapid increase in the industry’s understanding of hydraulic fracture geometry and proppant placement. Subsurface insights can largely be summarized into three themes: fractures are large planar features; near-wellbore effects may overprint far-field fracture geometries; and fractures predominantly produce from unaltered rock permeability. Armed with deeper understanding of hydraulic fracturing processes, completions teams are empowered to deviate from “manufacturing mode” development and instead employ prescriptive designs for specific geologic, geomechanical, and depletion environments. This talk integrates the latest learnings of hydraulic fracture characterization from case studies to present a cohesive summary of what fractures look like, where the proppant is placed, how fluids are produced through fractures, and why this knowledge informs better frac designs and better wells. If a particular topic is of interest to the section, emphasis may be given to one or more of: parent/child and depletion effects, refracturing, conductivity loss (proppant embedment, crushing), geomechanical property characterization, fracturing in geothermal, geomechanical considerations and fracturing for CO2 sequestration, or diagnostic technologies for unconventionals. Biography: Garrett Fowler is Chief Operating Officer at ResFrac, responsible for overseeing client engagement, professional services, and software licensing. ResFrac is a software company whose primary product is a fully coupled hydraulic fracture, reservoir, and geomechanics simulator. Garrett has led modeling studies in every major shale basin, as well as geothermal and conventional projects. Prior to joining ResFrac, Garrett was the Principal Reservoir Engineer at Tachyus Corporation, where he worked with national oil companies, supermajors, and independents across the world on deploying data science solutions. Prior to Tachyus, Garrett worked as a Reservoir Engineer for Occidental Petroleum specializing in waterflood surveillance, piloting, and optimization. Garrett attended Stanford University, where he graduated with distinction, receiving a Master of Science degree in petroleum engineering and a Bachelor of Science in energy resources engineering. Garrett was awarded a 2022 SPE Regional Completions Optimization and Technology Award and authored or co-authored 18 technical papers. As part of the international effort to combat global warming, significant attention is being given to ways to sequester (store for the long-term) carbon dioxide, which is a major contributor to the greenhouse effect. It is therefore critical that there is a universal means to record the storable quantities by recognizing the maturity of the projects to be implemented and the confidence that can be placed in the estimated volumes to be sequestered. This talk will look at some of the ways in which carbon dioxide can be stored and provide a review of the CO2 Storage Resources Management System (SRMS) framework prepared by the Society of Petroleum Engineers to classify and categorize the storable quantities. He is currently ivolved in CCS studies and application of the SRMS. He has a BSc in Physics from Bristol University and an MSc in Petroleum Engineering from Imperial College, London. Rawdon is past Chairman of the SPE Oil and Gas Reserves Committee and past member of the Board and current Chair of the Reserves Definitions Committee of the SPEE.
