HydraWell Intervention System: an advanced well plugging and annulus pressure remediation technology

Arne G. Larsen (HydraWell Intervention AS)

Wednesday, 23. November 2016

Abstract: Well plugging legislations require PandA plugs to be placed across the entire wellbore.
Historically, the technical solution for re-gaining annular barrier when cement is lacking in the annulus, has been to remove a section of the casings (section milling) above any hydrocarbon bearing formations prior to placing a rock to rock cement plug. The standard in the Norwegian continental shelf accepts minimum 50 meter / 165 ft of cement plug – times two, independently tested. This by itself is a challenging operation if done the traditional way and definitely time consuming with multiple runs, cuttings handling etc.
The following questions will be addressed:
How are P&A (Plug and Abandonment) of wells done? What are the statutory requirements? Why do we need a rock to rock barrier above the reservoirs? How can we get cement outside the casing without removing the casing? How can wells that are shut in due to excessive annuli pressures be repaired and put back on production or injection? How can the integrity be verified? What time savings can be achieved?
The concept was first introduced in 2010, and has proved significantly operational savings, while proving a solid methodology for permanently regaining barriers. The presentation will describe the systems, the enabling technologies and the experiences so far.

Biography: Arne G. Larsen studied mechanical engineering and petroleum engineering in Stavanger, Norway and joined the industry in 1982. He has worked with completion and workovers and well integrity for Amoco, Statoil and Baker Oil Tools prior to joining HydraWell in 2010.
