Description

"Consistent Hole Perforators, All Perforations Are Not Created Equal"

Dan W. Pratt, Vice President of Technology for Owen Oil Tools LP, a division of Core Laboratories

Dan has 38 years working in the areas of design and manufacture of oil-field explosives products, more specifically with oil field perforators or shaped charges. Dan's areas of interest include assessment of formation damage caused by jet penetration and charge design to enhance productivity and minimize formation damage. Dan holds undergraduate and graduate degrees in Chemistry, Engineering and Physics from the University of Texas at Arlington. Dan is an inventor on numerous U.S and foreign patents related to the design of shaped charges, shaped charge liners, materials used in their manufacture and propellant stimulation.
Dan has authored / co-authored a number of SPE & industry technical papers on the interaction of shaped charges with formation materials. These include "The Effects of Target Configuration on the Performance of Deep Penetrating Shaped Charges", "Performance Patterns for Perforating Charges Optimized in Hard and Soft Materials", “Experimental and Simulation Analysis of Jet-Perforated Rock Damage”, and “When is a Hole More Than a Hole”.
Dan is a member of numerous professional organizations including SPE, AIChE and AIME. He is an active member of the Society of Explosives Engineers, the Institute of Explosives Engineers (UK), and is a Founding Lifetime Member of the International Ballistics Society. Dan is Owen’s principal representative on the API (American Petroleum Institute) SC19 Subcommittee on Completion Equipment and spent over 25 years as voting member on the RP 43 and RP 19B Task Groups on Perforating. Dan chaired the Task Group responsible for the 2nd Edition revision of API RP 67, Recommended Practices for Oilfield Explosives Safety and is currently on the Steering Committee for the 3rd Edition. Dan is Owen’s primary representative on the IME (Institute of Makers of Explosives) Technical Committee and is a member of the recently formed Oil & Gas Subcommittee.
