"Latest Advancements in Far-Field Proppant Detection"
Terry Palisch
Global Engineering Director
CARBO Ceramics, Inc.
Abstract:
Identifying proppant location in hydraulic fracture treatments has been of interest for many years. However, until recently, most proppant detection techniques have been limited to the depth of investigation of gamma ray or neutron logs in the near-wellbore area. This talk will review a new proppant detection method which utilizes electromagnetic theory and specialty detectible proppant. This technique was most recently documented in SPE 184880 and presented at the SPE Hydraulic Fracturing Conference in February 2017. The presentation will also show the results of the first several field trials of this technology.
Speaker Bio:
After completing his BS in Petroleum Engineering at the University of Missouri-Rolla, Terry Palisch worked as a senior petroleum engineer for 10 years with ARCO in Alaska and for four years with ARCO in Algeria, North Africa. During a portion of his tenure in Alaska, Terry supervised the fracture stimulation program at ARCO's Kuparuk River Field. In 2004 Terry joined CARBO Ceramics, and in his current position as Global Engineering Director, he leads a team of technologists dedicated to developing and championing new products and services as well as advising clients on completion/fracture optimization. He has authored over 40 technical papers, is past chairman of the SPE Dallas Section and was the 2017 SPE ATCE Technical Program Chairman. He has been awarded the SPE MidCon Region Completions Optimization & Technology Award and the Regional Service Award. In 2013 he was named as one of the Top 15 Best Engineers by the Texas Independent Producers and Royalty Owners and in 2014 named the SPE Dallas Section Engineer of the Year.
