No Longer A Sunk Cost: Innovation & Collaboration For Decommissioning Subsea Infrastructure Andrew Robson Watt Woodside Energy Abstract: Decommissioning involves the timely, safe, and environmentally responsible removal, or satisfactorily dealing with, infrastructure from offshore oil and gas operations. With a significant number of aging subsea assets, it’s estimated the cost of decommissioning in Australia alone will exceed US$45 billion over the next 50 years. Not unlike a Rubik's cube, decommissioning can seem like an unsolvable puzzle. Many sides must work together to solve a complex problem with a multitude of variables including environmental impact, safety, timing, and cost. Many decommissioned materials cannot be re-used and are not easily recycled. Collaboration and innovation are vital to help us find the right combination of solutions to achieve the best outcomes. Universities play a crucial role in this process by providing access to cutting-edge research, knowledge, and resources. These collaborations can create an environment that fosters innovation, where academia and industry professionals can work together to share knowledge and expertise and explore new technologies and methodologies. This lecture highlights the subsea oil and gas infrastructure decommissioning challenges we face as an industry, showcases some innovative solutions, and explains how in today's rapidly changing world, innovation and collaboration are essential for achieving success. The key takeaway is that we must solve this puzzle together. By working collaboratively, we can create a more sustainable future, reduce costs, and achieve more efficient decommissioning. Like solving a Rubik's cube, cooperation, collaboration, and innovation require patience and persistence, but the rewards can be great, and our subsea infrastructure will no longer be a sunk cost. Biography: Andy Watt is an energy industry professional with over 26 years of experience in various technical roles across Australasia, North Africa, the Middle East, and Indonesia. He has expertise in land seismic operations, geophysics, reservoir engineering, forecasting, production optimization, technology, and innovation. Currently, Andy serves as the Innovation Advisor at Woodside Energy, Australia's largest oil and gas company. In this role, he collaborates with Australian universities and industries to develop and implement innovative technical solutions. Insightful Geomechanical Measurements for Converting Existing Hydrocarbon Reservoirs to Carbon Storage As the industry transitions from traditional hydrocarbon exploration and development into new energy and carbon capture and sequestration (CCS), formation integrity becomes more integral for asset longevity. For instance, many depleted fields are being assessed for CCS, but these depleted fields rarely have enough information within the overburden to assess geological seals or caprock integrity. Geomechanics modeling with calibration data is required for determining the maximum injection pressure for containment for the carbon sequestration. Often the critical data were not gathered during the initial appraisal phases of these existing fields to perform the assessment with certainty. Three existing technologies can provide the geomechanical information needed for integrity assessment, namely compressional and shear slowness in cased hole, stress barrier limits, and natural fracture distribution. First, full waveform sonic logs that provide compressional and shear slownesses (1/velocity) are generally acknowledged as the key data missing from the formation evaluation needed in for the geomechanics modeling. Cased boreholes within the overburden always were deemed unattractive environments for sonic measurements, and now these will be the main sources of information in aging assets. Second, when entering the reservoir, to determine the limit of the stress barrier (difference in stress between caprock and reservoir), stress magnitudes and orientation require an integration of sonic, borehole image, and minifrac testing. Maximizing the injection pressure without risking leakage is the goal for the asset performance. Third, assessment of natural fractures within the reservoir and evaluation of the caprock play an important role for maximum injectivity and for reducing leakage risks, respectively. Although borehole image log analysis has been around for decades, sonic imaging technology is now more commonly being used to assess the far field within tens of meters around the wellbore providing new insights. This work explains how existing technology from traditional oil and gas can be used for CCS reservoir and overburden assessment. Specifically, three topics are covered: (1) sonic data analysis within single-and double-string casings; (2) integration of sonic, image, and minifrac analysis for stress characterization; and (3) natural fracture evaluation using far field sonic imaging. Case studies from reservoirs worldwide (Asia, Europe, Middle East, North America) serve as examples of using these insightful measurements. Biography: J. Adam Donald is the Technical Director for Geomechanics and Wellbore Acoustics with Reservoir Performance Division, SLB, based in Dubai, UAE. He joined SLB in 1998 as a wireline field engineer has held field, technical, and management positions in Canada, USA, Norway, Malaysia, France, Romania, and United Arab Emirates. His area of focus has been on applications of wellbore sonic and image data on geomechanics, geophysics, and petrophysics workflows. He received his bachelor’s degree in geological engineering from University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada (1998), and a master’s degree in mining engineering from Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia, Canada (2004). Adam holds seven patents in areas of borehole acoustics and geomechanics and is a registered Professional Engineer in Canada. He is an active publishing member of SPWLA, SPE, ARMA, and SEG with over 50 industry and scientific articles.

Patents in Oil & Gas: Offense vs. Defense

The oil and gas industry is a story of technology development dating back to the tri-cone bit invented by Howard Hughes. Patents can be a key to innovation and market leadership. As discussed, they can be used both offensively and defensively. Su investigación en Intevep le permitió desarrollar varios equipos/sistemas de producción y LAG, con generación de 11 patentes de invención en EE UU., las cuales fueron registradas en más de 10 países adicionales, un equipo obtuvo licencia de comercialización otorgada por Intevep . Desde 1997 hasta el 2019 laboró para REDA, Schlumberger, desarrollando tecnologías para sistemas de LAG, con generación de 12 nuevas patentes de Invención en EE. UU. Desde el 2010 hasta el 2019, se desempeñó como Dir. de Currículo en LAG y Completación de Pozos, áreas de tutoría, mentoría y adiestramiento, incluyendo más de 250 cursos con alcance a más de 50 países. Actualmente es Dir. de Tecnología de la empresa FORCELIFT, dedicada a consultoría y adiestramiento, áreas Ingeniería de Producción y LAG. Es autor de más de 40 publicaciones, presentaciones y papers . Ha recibido numerosas Condecoraciones, otorgadas por su investigación en Intevep y en Schulmberger , y el Premio FUNDACITE a la Innovación tecnológica, entre otros. What does the energy transition actually mean for the Oil & Gas industry ?

Abstract: What does energy transition mean? What are we transitioning to? How and when will we get there? In hindsight, the energy transition movement means different things to different entities. To operators, the primary focus is to transform their business (influenced by regulations and legislative policies) by reducing their carbon emissions while also investing in cleaner low-carbon energy sources, such as geothermal and hydrogen. For service companies, it is another potential revenue stream by offering products and services oil and gas operators, as well as renewable power generation companies. For governments, it is defined as an essential need for energy diversification in order to achieve sustainable, self-sufficient solutions that are less impacted by socio-economic or geo-political factors, i.e., energy security. It is important to note that the ‘public’ understand that what is driving this paradigm shift: technology, policy, and cultural change. The energy transition concept will be broken down as a current ‘buzzword’ and popular concept that is fettered by technology hype, political agendas, and/or financial influences that are attached to the term. Finally, light will be shined on how the industry's previous institutional mindset has changed to a broad, open-minded desire to create a net-postive outcome using Environmental, Social, and Governance techniques. Biography: Bez is Vice President of Energy Security in Government Contracts for CyberWorX Energy, focused on national security intelligence and strategic consulting for implementing energy technology. Bez has 15 years of experience in the energy sector – from hydrocarbons to renewables. Economic Surprises of Late-Life Production Dwayne Purvis, P.E. Purvis Energy Advisors Abstract: For years, decommissioning costs were an after-thought to decision-making. They did not affect cash flows or business plans, and sometimes reserve reports did not even include them. Now, many legacy fields both within the U.S. and globally are declining to their final life stage. Even with many producing years remaining and a positive net present value, the total future cash flow can be – surprisingly – negative. Operators may not be ready for the unexpected reality since our industry has spent too little forethought on quantifying the scope of decommissioning, estimating its costs, ensuring security for the long term, and especially preparing funds for the surprisingly early onset of those costs. Though the price boom of recent decades delayed and distracted from the inevitable, natural depletion and the outlook for declining oil demand bring the issue to front. Now the industry finds itself with insufficient nomenclature, knowledge, or practices to handle decommissioning well. This presentation explains the unexpected late-life economic dynamics, the dangers they create, and how to foresee and avoid financial and environmental traps. Biography: Dwayne Purvis, P.E. has spent nearly 30 years in reservoir engineering and executive leadership as a consultant and operator. He has led or participated in hundreds of engineering and strategic studies over dozens of basins in the United States and abroad. Mr. Purvis leads Purvis Energy Advisors, and he frequently teaches, speaks, and writes for industry organizations and for Texas Christian University. SPE Swiss board members - Call for volunteers

Dear SPE Swiss members, SPE is celebrating its 20 years of existence. From the initial 30 members in 2004-05, SPE Swiss (originally labelled Geneva Section) peaked at close to 150 members in 2015. SPE Swiss felt the ageing of its membership, the downsizing of IHS Petroconsultants, the sudden closure of Addax Petroleum offices in Geneva, the relocation of Lundin’s staff in Norway. In the meantime, geothermal has brought a few members and the geo-energy trend has generated interest from and toward the SPE community. The SPE future in this part of the world largely relies on integrating SPE Swiss into the new Swiss and European Energy landscape. This is both challenging and exciting times. The current SPE Swiss board mandate has now expired, and we need to renew it. It is also the opportunity to bring in new energy and ideas . All board positions are now open: Chairperson, membership chair, program chair, treasury for the most important ones. If you are interested in joining the board and develop more activities within SPE Swiss for at least the 2 yrs to come, bring your ideas and put them in practice, it is the moment to come forward and lead the section into a new era. Top-Down Methane Emissions Detection and Quantification Methods for Oil and Gas Facilities

Abstract: Methane emissions from oil and gas facilities are a significant contributor to climate change and need to be accurately assessed to manage reductions and to meet sustainability goals and reporting requirements. Multiple approaches exist to address the challenge of quantifying methane emissions, from traditional “bottoms-up” leak detection to new technologies remotely measuring emissions “top-down” using satellites, aircraft, drones, and fixed devices. Each method has different capabilities and limitations, and selecting appropriate solutions for a particular situation can be a challenging task. This presentation will provide an overview of the options available, with a focus on top-down measurements. One technique that is emerging as a versatile and efficient approach across varied operating environments is the use of drones equipped with highly sensitive methane sensors that directly measure methane plumes. The presentation will explore this use of drones in more detail for onshore, offshore, and LNG facilities. Regional case studies will be used to illustrate the applications and consideration given to implementation in Singapore. Dave started his oil and gas career as a wireline engineer after completing his mechanical engineering degree and worked in the field for five years in locations across the Middle East. Tar Mats and Viscous Oil in Reservoirs - Decoding a Hidden, Costly Production Bottleneck

Tar mats often form in high-permeability sections of the reservoir, impacting pressure support, aquifer sweep, and well placement strategies. What mechanism causes the formation of the tar mat as well as the graded viscous oil above the tar mat? Why does the tar mat form at the current oil-water contact (OWC)? A reservoir simulation is shown to model the formation of the tar mat and associated viscous oil. The importance of reservoir architecture and petrophysical parameters is indicated in this process, explaining areal variations in tar mats. Novel Sonic-Derived Saturation Model to Estimate Water Saturation – Improvement over Archie’s Method

In shaly sands and low-resistivity, low-contrast reservoirs (LRLC), Archie’s saturation model often breaks down, leading to inaccurate water saturation estimates. We introduce a new semi-empirical saturation model that estimates water saturation using compressional and shear sonic log measurements. Archie’s saturation model has been the most widely used empirical approach for estimating water saturation in oil and gas reservoirs. It relies on measurements of formation resistivity, brine salinity, and the reservoir’s electrical properties to provide accurate estimates. The model assumes that the electrical conductivity of reservoir rock is primarily due to the conductive fluids occupying the pore spaces. Alternative models have been developed to address cases involving low-salinity brines or high clay content also have limitations and may not consistently outperform Archie’s equation. Our new approach is grounded in the principle that hydrocarbon-bearing formations typically exhibit lower bulk moduli than water-saturated rocks. The model aligns with theoretical rock physics frameworks and uses velocity data and established empirical relationships between P-wave and S-wave velocities. This model is designed to complement traditional resistivity-based models in the evaluation of both conventional and unconventional reservoirs, where those models are valid. However, in LRLC reservoirs, it yields more reliable water saturation estimates than resistivity-based saturation models.

Novel Slickwater Stimulation for Shales and Tight Reservoirs – Don’t Pump More Sand!

A Masterclass from John Ely, who received the ‘Legend of Hydraulic Fracturing’ award in 2021! John builds a case for a different technique to enable economic completion of tight reservoirs. This overcomes the tendency to "pump more sand" and the long-held concerns of destroying near-well permeability. Learnings from the Bossier Shale production enhancement, a unique Slickwater technique to stimulate verticals in ultra-tight reservoirs, help us optimize present-day horizontal designs. This leads to large volumes with much less proppant, and very selective perforating. Multiple well production data from 7 different reservoirs, and a comparison of production and economics with the "Waterfrac Sweep" process and offset horizontal production is presented. We go in-depth with a particular play in New Mexico.

Digital Twins for Wellbore Tool Design: A Neural Surrogate-Based Approach

Digital Twins developed from simulation-driven neural surrogates offer a new paradigm for the Wellbore Tools design. Traditional iterative optimization methods can be both time-intensive and costly. The webinar summarizes the key steps to develop the Digital Twin. We demonstrate effectiveness with the examples of compression-set packers for wellbore cementing applications and quad seals typically used in multi-closing sleeves for sand control and multi-stage hydraulic fracturing. Wellbore tools are complex mechanical systems required to reliably work in challenging downhole environments. The application environment can cause large plastic deformation of deployable metallic components and hyperelastic deformation of elastomeric seals. Such nonlinear interactions between their components and interdependent responses make traditional design optimization challenging. In the simulation-driven neural surrogates method, physics-based simulations are used to generate training data for neural networks. This produces a tool design surrogate. These Digital Twins correlate system responses to design parameters and are used to accelerate performance predictions and identify optimal designs. Critical analysis steps include identifying the governing design parameters using engineering mechanics, leveraging domain knowledge, efficiently populating the design matrix, defining an appropriate multi-objective performance function, validating the surrogate model, and identifying the optimal solution. AI and additive manufacturing (AM) are a powerful combination with the potential to accelerate the adoption of AM across industries. AM excels at producing complex geometries with minimal waste, agile supply chains, and shorter lead times. However, its broader adoption is constrained by high costs and persistent challenges in quality assurance. AM processes are highly sensitive to variables such as environmental conditions, material properties, machine variability, and design complexity. At the same time, AM is inherently data-rich—making it ideal for AI-driven insights. For example, AI can monitor the build process in real time, detect anomalies, and assess their impact on part quality as each layer is formed. Reactive approaches to these issues often result in higher operational expenditures (OPEX) and hinder the broader adoption of geothermal systems. The industry is increasingly leveraging advancements in data acquisition and data science to enhance operational efficiency. By integrating monitoring data with unstructured information, decision support tools can be developed to proactively address challenges and optimize performance. Drawing lessons from the petroleum sector, this lecture provides examples on geothermal operational challenges with a special focus on electrical submersible pumps and integrating digital tools and models to improve the production and operation. This presentation bridges geothermal energy operation, data science, and production technologies to offer insights relevant to both geothermal and petroleum sectors. The content can be tailored to address key interests in operational optimization, data analytics, or artificial lift systems. Biografija: Pejman is a top senior scientist, leads TNO's Production Optimization and AI teams in the energy transition unit. With almost 15 years of experience, he pioneers digital technologies in geo-energy systems, flow assurance, and data-driven decision support for real-time production enhancement across sectors like oil and gas and geothermal energy. Notably, Pejman leads national, European and international projects, collaborating with several energy companies. Pursuing a Ph.D. at Wageningen University, Pejman holds a Master's degree from Delft University of Technology, with over 20 publications and prestigious awards. His awards include winning the AInnovation competition in 2023, candidate for best researcher in 2015 and 2017. Natural Hydrogen: A Geological Novelty or a Game Changer for the Energy Transition?

Hydrogen is currently in vogue as the ultimate low carbon, sustainable energy solution. World consumption is predicted to grow eight-fold from around 70 million tonnes annually today to more than 550 million tonnes by 2050. Over 90% of current hydrogen supply comes from fossil fuels but given the ambitious global net zero targets where will all this future hydrogen supply come from? Finding a new way to produce hydrogen which does not require significant energy input nor emit CO2 yet is commercially viable is therefore extremely important for the World. Natural/geologic hydrogen which is generated within the Earth by on-going geological processes is being suggested as one such source. Until recently even the concept of naturally occurring hydrogen on the Earth was deemed impossible given its reactive nature, low atomic weight and its extremely small molecular size. Consequently, the exploration for natural hydrogen is still very much in its infancy. What we do know is that natural hydrogen certainly exists at the Earth’s surface as seepages or as low pressure/low volume accumulations. However, can it be found trapped as a free gas at depth with pressures sufficient for commercial flow rates using existing drilling technologies? This talk will discuss current examples of natural hydrogen exploration but will focus on a project where reservoir burial depths are greater than 3 kilometres and subsurface temperatures approaching 100°C. It will illustrate using the 1963 Monzón-1 well in northern Spain what a by-passed natural hydrogen discovery looks like and how by using existing oil/gas technologies the discovery could form the basis for Europe’s first commercial natural hydrogen development. The one take away from this lecture should be that natural/geologic hydrogen exists, it can be explored for and hopefully produced commercially by leveraging existing oil/gas people and technologies. Distinguished Lecturer: Christopher Atkinson Chris has over 40 years’ experience in the energy/resource sector initially working for Shell and then Atlantic Richfield in their reservoir research divisions and ultimately as the Exploration Vice President of ARCO Europe/Eurasia before the merger with BP plc. In 2001 Chris left big oil and co-founded the predecessor of Serica Energy plc which today is one of the top ten oil and gas producers in the UK North Sea. In 2018 he co-founded Helios Aragon which is exploring for natural/geologic hydrogen and helium gas in Spain, UK, Poland, Australia and Oman. Chris also currently acts as a non-executive director of Lime Petroleum in Norway and is the Chairman and board member for Masirah Oil in Oman. Chris is a member of the SPE Singapore section, a past president and life member of SEAPEX (Southeast Asian Petroleum Exploration Society) and spent several years as an active council member of the IPA (Indonesian Petroleum Association). BHA design and functioning are fundamental to drilling success. Among well trajectory control, rate of penetration (ROP), tool reliability, and other factors, roller reamer placement is important. It affects borehole quality, stick-slip tendencies, and bottomhole pressure stability. The AI approach to BHA optimization applies advanced machine learning and integrates drilling mechanics with predictive algorithms to deliver roller reamer positioning for operational efficiency. In his 18+ years there, he has had varied roles in well engineering, performance and technology, and project management for drilling projects. He has worked in the USA, Saudi Arabia, Colombia, Venezuela, Oman, the UK, and Ecuador. He completed his Chemical Engineering from Escuela Politécnica Nacional in Ecuador, and later an MBA from EUDE, and an M.S. in Renewable Energy from Universidad Internacional de Valencia in Spain. He has published 19 SPE papers. Doris IPINNIWA , TOTAL Energies At Total Energies, Doris has been engaged in many different energy projects. She was a key member of the team taking FID of the Northern Lights Projects. She was part of Carbon Storage Work Group. At TotalEnergies HQ, she worked closely with the research team to deploy the Ensemble Method for history matching using the Kalman Filter technique. She was the senior reservoir engineer in charge of the Anchor project which came on stream successfully in 2024 as the first 20kpsi technology development in deepwater. Currently, she is leading as the Head of Reservoir in an off-shore Nigeria deepwater asset, driving innovative solutions and advancements in the field. She has been active in SPE. She was the assistant chairperson for SPE CCUS technical section. She has recently joined the R&D technical section board as their treasurer.

Regional Event: Carbon Capture Wells – The same, but different

About the Presentation: This lecture will introduce carbon capture wells and highlight some of the unique challenges faced with constructing these wells. The similarities with conventional oil, gas and water wells will be explored and the differences will be explained. The lecture will touch on well integrity, injectivity challenges, chemical processes and some innovative modelling and testing approaches that can help in the design of CO2 injection wells. The differences between different CO2 store types will be explained and the different challenges faced in saline aquifer and depleted hydrocarbon stores explored. The lecture will explain how conventional oil and gas well design can transition to CO2 injection well design and the key role well engineers, production technologists, production chemists and near wellbore flow specialists need to play as part of a multidisciplinary approach to achieving CO2 injection well objectives. A key take away from the lecture will be that many of the existing oil and gas well design and construction skills are required for CO2 injection wells, but there are additional challenges to consider, challenges that we as an industry are well equipped to overcome. About the Distinguished Lecturer: Michael is an experienced industry professional and leader with over 35 years’ experience. A graduate of University College Dublin, Michael served on the API committee which developed procedures for return permeability testing. He has authored many technical publications on formation damage and numerical well modelling having developed procedures for modelling flow in wells and reservoirs using computational fluid dynamics. Drilling operation process automation examples can illustrate the concepts at play. The presentation’s main idea is how technology and processes must be deployed at scale to realize benefits in the well lifecycle for everyone. The value of well construction comes from hydrocarbons produced over a well’s lifecycle in a safe and economical manner. By definition, the design and delivery of a well have built-in production impacts. Other production impacts can come from well execution processes determining well properties. Examples are wellbore placement and hole quality, which can limit well functionality and constrain the range of subsequent wellbore operations. New systems seek to integrate groups of well delivery processes. One example is automating the process of drilling a 90’ stand of drill pipe which can then be repeated as new stands are added to deliver a well. This work aimed to improve operational efficiency by reducing process variation. However, since the wellbore quality delivered with each stand impacts well value, automation is a viable tool to manage lifecycle wellbore quality requirements. Adopting an interconnected well construction system approach is slow since so much change is required by every stakeholder, including organization, processes, and technology. Parties want to see the economic benefits before moving from departmental delivery goals toward managing the well construction value stream. This collaborative process can be applied to multiple areas where many independent stakeholders work together. Biography Matt Isbell is a recently retired Senior Drilling Engineering Advisor, formerly with Hess Corporation. He is a drilling system subject matter expert with worldwide experience. His current focus connects well construction roles with tools and processes to leverage digital drilling data and engineering to improve outcomes. He received a BSME in 1988 from The University of Texas at Austin. He serves on the SPE Forum Implementation Committee and chairs the IADC Drilling Engineering Committee and SPE Drilling and Wells Interoperability Group Advisory Board.

Identifying Construction Hazards with AI Vision – Lessons Learned

A two-phased pilot was conducted by Occidental to test the viability of AI vision at an oil processing facility construction site in the Permian Basin. A commercial platform was selected because of its robust suite of machine learning algorithms designed to identify safety hazards from a video stream. Additional features included analytics on the severity, type, and location of the hazards. Cameras were positioned at the edge of the location, facing areas of dense activity that included lifting, welding, trenching, driving, electrical work, and mechanical work. The first phase proved that AI vision was able to identify hazards with a high degree of accuracy. Observations were reported through an online dashboard complete with categorization, with still images and video clips. Data analytics provided insights that Occidental was able to take back to operations personnel. Clay Formation Characterization Using Supervised Machine Learning and Stochastic Multimineral Modeli

Abstract A recent study supporting the formation evaluation of argillaceous units considered for deep geological storage of radioactive waste will be presented in this session. Conducted within the TBO project, this work integrates over 5 km of core data from nine boreholes with a comprehensive logging suite — including Spectral GR, Density–Neutron–PEF–Sigma, and Elemental Spectroscopy — as well as high-resolution core measurements (XRF, MSCL). The workflow highlights: Rigorous depth matching, bias checking, and QC across datasets. Application of supervised machine learning to enhance quantification of key accessory minerals such as smectite, chlorite, and TOC. Integration into a stochastic Multimin inversion, calibrated to core porosity, grain density, and XRD mineralogy. Monte Carlo uncertainty analysis with 800 iterations ensuring robustness of results. The resulting model delivers a continuous, uncertainty-qualified description of mineralogy and porosity — critical for the safety assessment of radioactive waste repositories. Unlocking the Value of Produced Water as a Resource for Upstream Sustainability

Abstract: Produced water is often considered an undesirable by-product during hydrocarbon production due to both economic and environmental constraints. Treating and recycling produced water can unlock its value and serve as an alternative supply to seawater desalination and groundwater consumption, while promoting circular water management 4Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Recover). This presentation highlights several success stories on hypersaline produced water treatment, desalination, and its reutilization using a zero liquid discharge (ZLD) technology for crude oil desalting, fracking, and improved oil recovery. The examples are also shown on the consumption of highly concentrated reject streams obtained from ZLD for drilling and mineral recovery applications to demonstrate 100% circularity in produced water management. Lastly, the potential of mineral-rich ZLD reject streams for CO2 mineralization and lithium extraction will be highlighted in support of the carbon abatement and energy transition initiatives. All these hidden benefits associated with produced water are in great alignment with UN Sustainable Development Goals 6 (clean water), 7 (clean energy), and 13 (climate action). The “holistic importance” of produced water and its value discovered as “resource” in the talk represents a significant stride towards achieving a more resilient, efficient, and sustainable energy future. Speaker Bio: Dr. Subhash Ayirala is a petroleum engineering consultant at Saudi Aramco’s EXPEC Advanced Research Center, Saudi Arabia. He has expertise in waterflooding, improved oil recovery, and produced water management with an extended R&D focus on CO2 mineralization and mineral recovery. He previously worked for Shell E&P and has 20 years of experience in the industry. He is the recipient of the prestigious 2025 SPE Reservoir Description and Dynamics Award. Deep geothermal exploration in Singapore

Abstract Singapore’s first deep geothermal exploration campaign confirms the presence of a high-gradient, non-volcanic geothermal resource (40–44 °C/km), with temperatures exceeding 120 °C at depths below 2 km and projected to exceed 230 °C at 4–5 km. Techno-economic and life-cycle analyses indicate that next-generation Enhanced and Advanced Geothermal Systems (EGS/AGS) can deliver competitive baseload power and large-scale district cooling, achieving up to 61% cooling cost reduction and lifecycle emissions comparable to solar PV. These results position geothermal as a strategic, indigenous energy solution for Singapore’s net-zero transition, particularly for data centres and dense urban infrastructure. The adequate and proportionate understanding of the role of Geological CO2 Storage Regulations and Technical Standards is highlighted, as they are frequently perceived as the primary enablers of the CCS industry. Auto Coiled Tubing Drilling System Speeding Offshore Operations…Is Land Next?

We are pleased to welcome Noah Buck to our February 2026 meeting to present on the crossover potential of coiled tubing drilling (CTD) technology between the oil & gas and geothermal sectors. This lecture will explore how an autonomous CTD system designed for ultra-deep, large-diameter, hard rock offshore wells can address shared drilling challenges in both industries. Biography Noah Buck spent the first half of his career in well intervention services with Halliburton, Superior Energy Services, and Emerald Surf Sciences across the US in various operations, engineering, and sales roles. Noah now leads business development across multiple product lines in the Intervention and Stimulation Equipment Business-Unit for NOV. As the Global Business Development Director, he tackles technically complex equipment solutions, leading efforts into cryogenic aerospace opportunities, geothermal energy development, and pipeline/processing solutions. Abstract The oil & gas (O&G) and geothermal sectors face similar technical challenges, particularly in drilling through hard formations, managing complex well trajectories, and handling the costs and risks of deep, hot-rock drilling. These shared issues open the door for collaboration and technology transfer, especially in advanced drilling systems. One promising avenue is coiled tubing drilling (CTD). While typically used in small-diameter O&G wells for its efficiency, reduced risk, and cost savings, CTD has potential for scalable geothermal deployment, where safety and economics are paramount. A development team, in collaboration with a national oil company, has designed an autonomous CTD system for ultra-deep, large-diameter, hard rock offshore wells. This system can achieve tripping speeds 3–4× faster than conventional drill pipe, reduces manual handling, and allows continuous circulation for pressure control and thermal management—plus real-time wireline telemetry.

Dr. John Griffin , Associate Professor, Nicholls State University, will speak on “HOW, WHEN, WHERE, AND WHY DEEP WELL SALTWATER INJECTION INDUCES SEISMICITY”. Lunchtime meeting. Abstract Long dormant faults in basement rock below sedimentary basins have been recently “awakened” by injecting large volumes of produced saltwater-Oklahoma and Kansas are two instances. While friction along these dormant faults has prevented movement (historically geologic eons), the increase in pore pressure due to injection has reduced effective stress which allows hanging wall and foot wall to move relative to one another and this generates seismic energy reaching the surface. Buildings, foundation are damaged and in some cases, injury. Some states have responded with guidance, oversight, or making computer-based models readily available for injection well planning ( https://hirescatalog.texnet.beg.utexas.edu ). How distant can these effects reach? Can the problem be controlled with restricting injection under a prescribed pressure? What geologic zones are more susceptible? Biography Dr. John Griffin joined the petroleum industry in 1979 after a year as a geologist in the coal fields of northern Alabama. He began with Amoco Production then a company man with Chevron working offshore LA, south & west Texas, and the North Sea. He worked for Baker Hughes, Turbo-Chem and numerous completion fluid companies serving offshore Louisiana. He has been a professor at UL-Lafayette, New Mexico Tech, LSU, and Nicholls State; the latter since 2003. He has taught industry courses for SPE (Pittsburg, Long Beach) & PDVSA (Maturin, Ciudad Ojeda, Venezuela). Since 2011 he has been an expert witness on numerous oilfield incidents in litigation. He speaks Spanish at intermediate level and has enjoyed travel to Cuba (3x), Peru (2x), Honduras, & Guatemala. He and his wife Airstream out west and golfs occasionally. He pulls for the Red Sox, whoever Derrick Henry is playing for, and the Celtics. His geology BS is from Emory, MS from Alabama, and PhD from LSU. He’s authored numerous technical papers.

Criticality of Underground Gas Storage – Technology, Economics & Energy Resilience

Underground natural gas storage serves as a critical pillar of U.S. energy reliability, balancing seasonal demand, moderating price volatility, and safeguarding supply during peak consumption, particularly in winter months. However, the U.S. gas storage system is under increasing strain. While natural gas demand is projected to grow by approximately 4.5 Bcf/d through 2030, storage capacity expanded by only 0.1% annually between 2014 and 2023, well below the 1% in the prior decade. As a result, several regions now operate storage utilization exceeding 90%, creating an urgent need for new storage facilities to meet expanding demand from industrial growth, LNG exports, data centers, and renewable energy backup needs. This webinar, the first in a three-part series , introduces the fundamentals of underground gas storage. Topics include storage reservoir types, key operational parameters, working gas and cushion gas concepts, and operating envelopes required to maintain reservoir and well integrity. This sets the stage for subsequent webinars covering the conversion of depleted oil and gas reservoirs to store gas and the application of underground gas storage and CO₂-EOR technologies to carbon capture and sequestration. Together, the series explores how underground storage plays a growing role in energy security, infrastructure planning, and long-term carbon footprint reduction. Speaker Bio: Dr. Tuba Firincioglu is the Managing Director at Nitec LLC. She is a career reservoir engineer and a numerical simulations expert. She has performed or managed reservoir studies involving dry gas, gas condensate, volatile oil, and black-oil fields, including modeling and design of many conventional and unconventional EOR applications. Her experience covers most geological environments from fluvial sands to carbonates. She has worked on all the major unconventional basins in the United States, including Bakken, Eagle Ford, Permian, and others. Dr. Firincioglu holds an M.S. degree from Stanford University and a Ph.D. degree from Colorado School of Mines, both in Petroleum Engineering.

Mar 2026 Monthly Meeting: Toolkit for Making Better Decisions when Faced with Ethical Dilemmas

Abstract: This Lecture is designed to raise ethical awareness and to develop insights in SPE members into the significance of the preamble and the twelve canons in SPE’s Code of Conduct. An understanding of professional and ethical responsibility is paramount to every SPE member working in the petroleum industry. However, the ethical dilemmas members experience while progressing through their career stages can vary in nature and complexity, spanning a broad spectrum from issues for students, for individual contributors or issues encountered at managerial and executive level positions. Common ethical issues include expert witness testimony, employment, competitive bidding, confidentiality, conflict of interest, copyrights, intellectual property, data selection and management, operating standards, regulations, reserves booking, third party opinions, corruption, plagiarism, and citations of others’ work. Ethical behavior is required to manage professional relationships with stakeholders including contractors, vendors, partners, landowners, competitors, governments, regulatory agencies, employees, management, and coworkers. Members will take away from this Lecture a toolkit to enable them to make better decisions when faced with an ethical dilemma. Bio: C. Susan Howes is President at Subsurface Consultants & Associates (SCA) leading the firm’s consulting, recruitment, and training services with a commitment to technical excellence. She brings industry experience from her tenure at Anadarko and Chevron, where she held roles in business development, HR, organizational capability and reservoir management. She has coauthored papers and articles on the topics of ethics, uncertainty management, risk management, and talent management. Howes received the SPE DeGolyer Distinguished Service Medal, is an Honorary Member and Distinguished Lecturer for 2019-20, and is 2027 SPE President. Howes is a member of the Advisory Council at the Jackson School of Geoscience at the University of Texas (UT). Howes holds a BS degree in Petroleum Engineering (PGE) from the UT and was named a 2024 PGE Distinguished Alumna.

Talk title: Carbon Capture Wells: The Same, but Different Presenter : Michael Byrne from Elemental Energies Time: Wednesday, Mar 25, 2026, from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm. Location: Schlumberger Doll Research, One Hampshire Street, Cambridge, MA 02139, United States Abstract: This lecture will introduce carbon capture wells and highlight some of the unique challenges faced with constructing these wells. The similarities with conventional oil, gas and water wells will be explored and the differences will be explained. The lecture will touch on well integrity, injectivity challenges, chemical processes and some innovative modelling and testing approaches that can help in the design of CO2 injection wells. The differences between different CO2 store types will be explained and the different challenges faced in saline aquifer and depleted hydrocarbon stores explored. The lecture will explain how conventional oil and gas well design can transition to CO2 injection well design and the key role well engineers, production technologists, production chemists and near wellbore flow specialists need to play as part of a multidisciplinary approach to achieving CO2 injection well objectives. A key take away from the lecture will be that many of the existing oil and gas well design and construction skills are required for CO2 injection wells, but there are additional challenges to consider, challenges that we as an industry are well equipped to overcome. Biography : Michael is an experienced industry professional and leader with over 35 years' experience. A graduate of University College Dublin, Michael served on the API committee which developed procedures for return permeability testing. He has authored many technical publications on formation damage and numerical well modelling having developed procedures for modelling flow in wells and reservoirs using computational fluid dynamics. Michael served as an SPE distinguished lecturer in 2009-2010 and again in 2014-2015 and has presented technical papers and training courses globally. More recently Michael has worked in CO2 storage and has contributed to well design in several CO2 stores. Apr 2026 Distinguished Lecturer Series: Mission Possible - High Temperature Sensors and Electronics

Abstract: It's not impossible to make the sensors and electronics required for accurate directional drilling work above 200°C. It's difficult for sure, but it has been shown to be very possible and this presentation will explain how it can be done. This topic has become important because a new generation of geothermal wells require very accurate well placement and directional drilling. The economics of higher reservoir temperatures are compelling, and operators will want to drill deeper and hotter wells. Oil and gas technologies are directly transferable to geothermal and can result in the same reduction in drilling costs as seen in the unconventional shale boom in the United States over the last 15 years. Unfortunately, oil and gas technology is generally limited to a temperature capability of about 175°C. This is unlikely to be enough to satisfy the demand of geothermal operators for higher temperatures and is also not enough to make any significant impact on the accurate drilling of hydrothermal wells. This presentation will show how the unconventional geothermal industry is likely to grow over the coming decades and will make a compelling case for drilling deeper and hotter wells. It will describe how the industry has explored the potential for high temperature drilling equipment and what lessons have been learned. It will show some realistic options that the industry has for making reliable electronics and sensors in the deeper, hotter wells of the future a reality. Biography : Over 38 years John Clegg has worked in engineering and operations roles with upstream technologies including drill bits, drilling motors, rotary steerable tools, measurement-while-drilling, and logging-while-drilling. He holds a Master's in Engineering Science and a Diploma in Global Business, both from Oxford University, England. He has 14 patents, has authored multiple papers, and has served on Programme Committees and Technical Section Boards for SPE. He is a past SPE Distinguished Lecturer (2020-2021). John helped to found the SPE Geothermal Technical Section and is currently CTO of Hephae Energy Technology, a company founded to develop solutions for drilling high temperature wells.

Cancellations must be made before the registration deadline and are subject to a small fee. NEVER WASTE A CRISIS Aliso Canyon Blowout & Recovery Presented by: Alan J. Walker Energy & Geoscience Institute University of Utah Abstract On October 23, 2015, the largest methane leak from a natural gas storage facility in U.S. history was discovered by Southern California Gas Company (SoCal Gas) at the SS-25 well in its Aliso Canyon Storage Facility near Los Angeles. The blowout continued for 111 days, resulting in the well being permanently plugged and abandoned after emitting approximately 5 Bcf of natural gas and extracting the failed casing to approximately 890 feet subsurface. This failure prompted lengthy reports by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the Department of Transportation (DOT), as well as Root Cause Analyses by Blade Energy and California state agencies. Alan Walker was in his first week as a Supervising Petroleum Engineer of the Californian Division of Oil, Gas, and Geothermal Resources (DOGGR) when the leak was discovered. He was selected to be DOGGR’s emergency response technical lead, providing regulatory oversight for seven kill attempts, relief well drilling, the Control-Cement-Confirm operation, requirements to return the facility to service, and the development of storage operations regulations. In this talk, Alan will provide a frank discussion of the blowout and the five-year effort to improve the integrity of underground storage. The insights shared will be applicable for repurposing and retrofitting projects globally. Alan will motivate the audience to develop a safety culture that includes Management of Change, Root Cause Analysis, and the principle to “Never Waste a Crisis.” Biography Alan Walker is an Engineering Advisor at the Energy & Geoscience Institute (EGI), University of Utah. He counsels staff supporting geothermal, hydrocarbon, and carbon research. Alan’s career spans forty years in exploration and production (E&P) engineering, regulatory affairs, and natural gas supply and storage throughout western North America. Alan served nine years in the U.S. Army and is a retired Army Reserve Special Forces colonel with over thirty years of service. He has completed three combat tours in Afghanistan, the Philippines, and Iraq. Alan holds a B.S. in Military Engineering from West Point, an MBA from Rensselaer, and an M.S. in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Utah.

Further details to follow, registration will be activated in April 2026 Distinguished Lecturer : Diego Vazquez Anzola (Halliburton) Carbon Storage Risks and Costs: Busting Perceptions & Myths Abstract: Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) has historically faced challenges in achieving commercial-scale success across various regions globally. The conversation often circles back to pervasive beliefs regarding CCS, namely the assertion that it is excessively risky and costly. This presentation highlights a range of successful global CCS projects and the diverse business strategies they employ, some of which operate independently of governmental subsidies or carbon pricing. The adequate and proportionate understanding of the role of Geological CO2 Storage Regulations and Technical Standards is highlighted, as they are frequently perceived as the primary enablers of the CCS industry. This lecture will explore the crucial importance of selecting suitable geological sites for CO2 storage. It will also address operational challenges in managing fluids with unique thermodynamic properties and examine how existing legacy wells, whether repurposed or not, can affect the risk and cost aspects of CO2 storage projects. Adequate site selection, operational considerations and the impact of legacy wells are essential aspects associated with successful implementation of CCS at scale. Furthermore, the discussion concludes with reflections on Value generation beyond direct economic revenue, highlighting scalability and maturation time as key performance indicators for CO2 storage projects. Biography: With two decades of energy sector experience, Diego has worked on diverse projects, from hydrocarbon exploration to carbon capture and storage (CCS) and sustainable energy solutions. Diego's portfolio includes significant involvement in prominent commercial CCS projects like Northern Lights (Norway), Aramis and Porthos (Netherlands), Endurance (UK), Gorgon (Australia), Prinos (Greece), Lang-Lebah (Malaysia), and Arthit (Thailand). Diego specializes in translating CO2 storage regulations into detailed operational plans. He holds the role of Principal Advisor and CCS Practice Lead for the Eastern Hemisphere at Halliburton and is an advisory board member for a New York-listed startup focused on optimizing CC(U)S costs.
