The Future of Well Construction: An Adaptive Process for Real-Time Well Design Optimization with Managed Pressure Drilling
Tuesday, March 10, 2026
Noon - 1 PM CDT 11:30 AM Lunch Served
Abstract In high-pressure high-temperature (HPHT) reservoirs and deepwater exploratory wells, uncertainty often leads to over-engineered designs and increased operational costs and challenges. Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD) techniques offer cost-effective solutions to mitigate risks and enhance operational efficiency. Early implementation of MPD in the project life cycle yields significant benefits such as improved safety, risk management, and operational efficiency. This presentation emphasizes the value of integrating MPD into well design optimization, highlighting its potential to reach target depths, reduce casing strings, and effectively manage uncertainties. It discusses case studies showcasing cost savings and operational benefits, outlines enablers of MPD integration, and proposes new guiding criteria for a systematic and integrated approach to optimize well design while considering operational implications and cost benefits. This lecture will demonstrate how incorporating Managed Pressure Drilling benefits from the early stages of well design can lead to a significant improvement in efficiency, cost assurance, and safety in the well delivery process.
Biography With over 25 years of global industry experience, Oscar specializes in Underbalanced Drilling (UBD) and Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD), focusing on pioneering new technologies and integrating MPD into well design. He has authored over 20 industry papers, trained nearly 1,000 professionals, and served in leadership roles in industry committees, including the IADC UBO/MPD Committee. Noteworthy contributions include shaping industry practices like API RPs 92U, 92M, 92S, championing IADC Riser Gas Handling Guidelines, and development of the IADC MPD Certification Training program. Oscar was honored with the SPE Dallas 2023 Engineer of the Year Award and holds multiple US patents.
